Oops... Advice?

I started working in the meat department of my store on Wednesday. Today was only my third day. My boss is very cool and very friendly. Despite that, I HATE the job with a passion. I come in, he tells me what to stock and I stock it. Only problem is I guess I am not in the best shape because I am so sore after work that I cannot move. I have to pop pain pills in order to come in the next morning. So today, I asked my boss if I could go home early (yes, even though it was only my third day) because I was in a LOT of pain. He, being so cool and understanding, said "yeah that's not a big deal. Just hang around until 11 and you can go." I should have stopped there but my big mouth had to say "Thanks, man I appreciate that. I'm just not sure stocking is for me..." To which he replied that I should let him know sooner rather than later if I plan on quitting. I think I just screwed myself out of this job. I WAS thinking of quitting but wasn't entirely sure because I wanted to see if I could get used to the pain and work. Should I look for another job? Will he fire me or keep urging me to quit? Any advice would be swell.

When I first started working retail, I was sore as sore could be. After a month, I became completely use o it. Thing is though, the sides of my toes have been numb ever since.

If stocking does you in, get out now. Sure, you came in at the worst point of the year, but if you are already hurting, maybe cashier or bagger may be a better spot for ya.

Most of the soreness should should only last for a few weeks or so. After that your body should adjust and it won't be that bad.

I also work in the meat department in a busy store. When I first started, I had to work 8 days in a row and I was very sore, but after a couple of weeks it wasn't noticeable anymore.

Stocking the shelves is nothing now; try doing a several hundred piece truck by yourself with 70 to 80 pound boxes and then stocking all of that. This is how it is for me currently on Sundays; we are short handed and have been for a while. We get new people and they quit within a week.

Let me get this straight... stocking 1-2lb packages of bologna and sausage/bacon and you are sore? Well exactly what have you been doing all ur life besides gaming in ur parents basement? Like the one grocery stocker said what if you had to stock cases up to 80# all night long? Son U R SOFT! This job isn't going to get you into a respectable, healthy shape but it might help u from becoming a 500lb blob that has to use one of the motorized handicap carts because ur too fat to walk more than 20 ft at a time. Good Lord! Unfortunately that is what this nation has become.. a country full of soft, whiney fatasses.

The soreness will go away and guess what u will have actually developed some muscle tone in your arms and shoulders.. but u still have a hundred miles to go and a lot of bad road ahead.. the decision is urs..Puss Out and whine to go home early or man up and work like a young adult should. DROP AND GIVE ME 20!

lol pretty funny. I considered deleting this post b/c its a little pointed. but I honestly must say that I though the same thing although I wouldn't word it the same way.  working a new job can make you use muscles that you haven't used in quite a while.  I think after a few days you will find that things get easier and you will learn the tricks to make it less stressful on your body.  but yea like the other poster sais " either man up or puss out"

Stick with it. It gets easier, it really does. I used to not be able to handle standing on my feet for 8 hours, I'm a little out of shape (no i'm not 500lbs like that one anon mentioned lol) but it's a lot easier now. I still am tired when I get off work but I can handle it a lot easier now.

I've lost 15 pounds too, from both going on walks as much as possible and working. So yeah stick with it :)

I use to come home with blisters on my feet so bad that before i was able to come to work i had to wrap my feet in bandages under my socks. After a month or so my feet got use to the pain and I lost a lot of weight in the process.

To those who think working meat is easy let me tell you it is not as you would think. Try breaking down 400 - 450 pc pallets with 1 person with some boxes weighing as much as 100 lb.
