Bagger to Cashier questions
Permalink

I was told on break the other day that I was going to become a cashier and once I turn 18 I'll be put into the office. i won't train for another couple week. I have a couple questions about pay.

I won't train for cashier for another couple weeks.

Right now I make $7.90 an hour. Minimum wage in Ohio is $7.85 currently. I received my first raise after thirty days of working. I know at least in the columbus division cashiers make an extra 10 cents. In January min wage goes up to 7.95 an hour. If I get pushed to cashier before January first will I only make 8.00 an hour. Or would. I make 8.10 an hour? If I get cashier after Jan first then I should get $8.10 correct? I'm just hoping I don't get ripped off this way.

what tips do you guys have? how much better is cashier over bagger? I've heard it's better easier to scan than bag. And no carts or trash!

I have no idea about your pay, but I would expect it to be the higher option since the new minimum wage will push even entry level pay up and you would have to be higher than that.

As for which is better, all I have to contribute is that cashiering is (often) less physical, but can be much higher stress, depending on how much attention you pay to doing it right.

I'm in agreement. I wouldn't say one job is easier than the other, it just depends on what you like doing more. But, I wouldn't say cashiers don't have to still clean up and what not. Cashiers are front-end workers just like baggers, and can do a lot of the jobs the baggers do. Granted, a lot of them don't, but, some actually go out of there way to be helpful to all the needs of the front end.

How could it be more stressful?

All I could see if memorizing produce codes being stressful. There is no bagging (unless out of bagger) no playing Tetris  to put bags into.

any tips?

 LOL.

Are you being serious? If so, maybe you're not ready to be a cashier yet.

They literally reach borderline harassment against you if you don't reach that silly score thing they keep track of (ELMS, I think?). Here, it's score over 95%. Any less than that will result in nagging from the store manager to the Front End manager. Plus, customers take out their frustrations not on corporate or manufacturers, but you. Yes, you. The one who doesn't set the prices and has no form of authority whatsoever.

Be sure to check IDs and put in the correct date. An older cashier at my store just got busted for selling alcohol to a minor. It was a sting where they went the whole 9 yards in making the kid look a lot older than what he was. The kicker here though is, the cashier did check the ID, but didn't confirm the age. Cashier and store both fined $250 each.

Here, you can technically bypass the age check without inputting a dob, but every cashier knows the requirement to input the age is mandatory, so nobody has any excuse.

Sure

Tip #1 - You've got a lot to learn with that kind of attitude

I was a cashier for 6 months and I went back to being a bagger since you do more things (not as repetitive) and you also don't have to deal with angry customers ( as much). I have been at Kroger in the Columbus division and make $8.10 an hour as a bagger now. If you do express it is a lot more small orders but you have to bag them your self. Also you must learn to do WIC, produce codes, and how to override coupons and such. I liked being a cashier for about 5 months then it got boring. Good luck.

Why didn't you transfer to the deli/bakery or something else? Tons of different things to do in deli/bakery. Ditto for produce.

My store manager doesn't like me since I went from cashier back to bagger so he won't allow me to move departments.

Well that was probably not a well thought through move. Do you think about the future? How childish will it sound on an interview for your next job that you went from bagger, to cashier (a somewhat trusted position), then back to bagger because you couldn't rough out a little stress? You should have just quit tbh because then you wouldn't be choosing the lesser of two evils.
