So, what's it like at a Kroger store on Dec. 24th, closing time? Do peeps wait til the last possible minute to shop, then freak out when they discover the locked doors?
You got that right. I had to close Thanksgiving 2012. The store closed at 3p.m. and the manager told me to stand outside the door @ 255 and not to let another customer in. At @ 2:57 a couple comes up and I tell them sorry we are closed. The jackass guy says, why its not 3p.m. and I need ice cream. I said sorry store's closed. The guy continued to argue with me, I NEED ICE CREAM! After being told 2-3 more times he wasn't coming in, he stormed off.

This guy was being a regular ass because he couldn't get his way.
The way I always did it, was I started closing announcements at 30 minutes to close, every 5 minutes. At 15 til, I posted two employees at the front doors, one at each door to tell customers how much time they had before close. At 5 til, the incoming doors were locked and turned off. I also turned off the outgoing doors and had the two employees at the front door not let anyone in, and I stood there as backup. Worked well each year, and I could usually get all of my employees out by 15-20 after each time.
I did have a few people come up and try to get around me. Once lady said she just needed milk, it was important for Christmas Eve. I told her my employees had importnat things to do on Christmas Eve and we were closed. She said something about going to Marsh, and I told her "They're closing now too. Merry Christmas!"
I also had someone ask if we were opening when I checked on the store Christmas Day. I almost asked if they were blind, considering I had parked my car 3 feet from the front door, and it was 8pm on Christmas Day. But I was nice, for once.

It all depends on your area. Regular stores may not be bad, but marketplaces may get it a bit worse because people will also be picking up very-last minute gifts. We also do pretty much exactly what management_drone mentions. It helps a lot. Also helps to have posted your closing time well in advance so you have that to fall back on if someone gets pissed.
One of the craziest things I ever saw was when I was walking the store and found a young couple hiding in the fitting room. It was five minutes after closing time. I was like "Ummm.....YEAH. What are you doing?" "Ohhh, nothin'." They some how got the idea they were gonna continue shopping after the store was empty and locked up.
What about the ones that don't speak English. At the store I'm at, it's a mix of Hispanic and Oriental that don't or act like they don't speak English.

He wanted in just to get cigs? Ha ha you know most gas stations stay open on Christmas.
This may be a little off subject but last night I told the assistant manager around 6:30 PM that tomorrow night we will be getting ready to close. He told me to get on the P.A and confuse everyone and say Attention customers tomorrow night this time in 30 minutes we will be closing. He knows I am crazy and if the main manager was not their I would have done it.
Man, did I get an earful about people telling us that we shouldn't be closing early. Some even said we shouldn't even close tomorrow. What really ticked me off was people saying "y'all don't deserve to be off tomorrow!". I wanted to smack them so badly.
Also, I got to see the best and the worst of people's lives. Nothing like seeing a family who arrive happily on your register suddenly become gloomy when their card was declined due to insufficient funds. Apparently, they hoped that the husband earned enough money for them to have a small yet proper dinner, but the bills that they had to pay for first ended up taking up most of the money. :(
On the flip side, there's plenty of people who bought plenty of food because they've got loved ones coming over who they haven't seen in a while. Also, there's this one family who went through my register that bought those brown bags to donate to the food bank. They didn't even mind; playfully discussing if they should buy only half or the whole entire row of bags.
I think tonight was the first X Mas eve in all my years with Wal Beast that we actually closed on time; it was pleasantly shocking to have the place nearly flat-line by 7 o'clock. When we closed at 8, there was hardly any one left to shepherd out and wish a Merry Christmas to. For me, that was maybe the best gift of the season!

Yeah, I remember closing up on a holiday. The store technically closed at 5 PM. And usually, all the store employees would be out by 5:30, but the FE manager had EVERYBODY out by 5:15. Someone wanted to go home badly! Anyway, I had to go past the store again later that night to visit with family. Well, sure enough...10 PM...2 or 3 cars are stopped in front of the store in an empty parking lot, and there are people standing there, looking in the windows to see if anyone is in there. And I kept saying to myself, "Good luck, people! If you want to stand there and freeze, be my guest!" That always happens. You can post a sign on the door and everything, and you will still get people trying to get in after closing time!
