for a part time job in the grocery department i feel like I'm at work every damn day, every day. i have no time to see my family who is in town this week that I only see once a week. I couldn't take the week off or even a day because i haven't been at kroger for a year. this sucks.

There's an easy solution.  Quit.  Problem solved.

Ya know, if you're only part-time, they can only work you 28 hours or less. Anything over has to be through mutual consent. I guess your store could do it differently, but, I doubt it.

Here, I regularly get 32+. Typically 34. They can schedule you up to 40.

The new limit in my division is a full 40. Anything after that needs consent and gets automatic overtime.

P.S. Any more than five days in a single week is automatic overtime as well.

Your contract must provide everyone with health insurance benefits then I'm guessing.

I don't think people realize the commitment Kroger wants from their employees....Kroger will determine your life schedule--not the other way around. If you don't like the time commitment get out before you get sucked in and stuck working 48 hours a week making journeyman!
