I have top seniority at Kroger . When someone calls off or is a no show, am I first in line to cover that shift even though it would be over time for me ? Or can my head ask to work other employee's that are already working to stay and get the OT?
You must mean that you are the highest seniority in YOUR dept. Generally if you are off and someone calls in, if their only option is to give someone overtime, I think they'd give it to someone who is already working that day--I'm not sure if that's the proper procedure, but typically it's easier if they only need 1 or 2 hours of OT to get the job done (you can't just come in and work and hour on your day off). Now if nobody already working wants to stay over, they should call you first before calling less senior employees. That's my view on it

If it's not overtime, then they can ask anyone. For example, if they need somone to stay over an hour and you've worked 8 hours and someone else has only worked 5, they're going to ask the person who's only worked 5 hours to stay over to avoid paying the overtime.

yes, but I think he's saying if they need someone to work OT and he is OFF, would they be required to call him in or would they be able to give the OT to a less senior employee who is already at work that day. In my experience, they always ask those who are already at work that day. What if they only need someone to work a couple hours to help a dept get caught up? they wouldn't call OP in for just a 2 hour OT shift.
This can vary by union contract. Usually if the overtime is less than the minimum call in guarantee of 3 (sometimes 4) hours, they can ask somebody who is already there to stay.
