I rely on rides to get to work. I am a part time employee but am called in to come early or on my days off nearly every single day off I get. Mostly because every week our schedule is full of holes and instead of fixing it my dept. head just waits and calls us in. Today I was scheduled for a short 6 - 10 shift. I told my rides that I was scheduled as such so they understandably went to go do their own thing until I needed a ride. Of course I get a call from my boss asking if I could come in early, just like almost every other day. I don't mind coming in early or even on my days off, but the constant calling has to stop. Anyway I tell him sorry but I can't because I have no ride. To which he replies that he can pick me up on his lunch. Ok I thought. I told him where I live and he says oh, nevermind. My lunch wouldn't be long enough to come get you. And now I just feel guilty for saying no when they obviously needed the help. Any advice or similar experiences?

Screw em'. The schedule should be made right the first time. Just make sure the contract is being being carried out properly so you don't get screwed out of call-ins and/or hours.
they are calling you because you are pick up your phone. If you don't want to come in, dont answer. Managers wont take the time to call people if they know they wont give any reply. By the same token dont cry about not getting hours.

This advice is horrible, and violates the contract. If they don't at least try to call you in and someone with less seniority gets the hours, you're entitled to those hours' pay.
You get called because you're reliable. This is a good quality to have. Don't feel guilty about not being able to make it, though. It's a request by your manager, and I'm sure he/she appreciates any help you can offer.
