What do Floor Monitors/Supervisors do?

At a job fair I applied to be a cashier or to work in another dept (this one is one of the huge stores that sells electronics, furniture, etc). At my follow up interview I was instead hired to be a floor supervisor because I have a lot of experience kissing ass :) Directing traffic and answering questions, filling in everywhere.. is that what I can expect? How is it different from working the customer service desk? What are the pros and cons of the position? Is there a pay differential at all?

You took the job without knowing anything about it? Yeah, you'll do.

You signed up for THE worst position if you went through with the floor supervisor thing.

A supervisor is a glorified cashier that makes no more money than a regular cashier and has to deal with the following:

1. Keeping the lines low. (Harder than it sounds)

2. Keeping the cart lobby full.

3. Checking the bathroom log.

4. Ordering store sweeps.

5. Reducing go-backs.

6. Answering idiotic questions like "Do you sell Xbox games?"

7. Having to deal with countless cashier issues like coupons not working.

8. Having to make sure trash cans aren't too full.

9. Putting up with tardy employees.

10. Convincing the baggers to talk to customers.

I could go on. The CSM and Front End Lead both make more than the average supervisor, but you won't be a lead unless you are full time, which requires someone above you in seniority to... Die. You should've applied for a real position like day grocery or bakery.

Ah, well, indeed, if I passed my spit test I have been hired to do the worst job.

If I dislike it that much I'll quit or or switch departments, whatever comes first. I could use something that could be called management experience. My resume is a bit one note, and the challenge will help me grow (into an agoraphobic?).

I've been a cashier for years and the things you mentioned sound better than being strapped to a register ALL day long. I hated that I had to explain to a customer what went wrong, wait for the override and then explain it AGAIN to the floor monitor and AGAIN to someone else if that particular store monitor was clueless, which was sometimes the case.

Glorified cashier, huh? I'll take the glory...the glory of cashiers and baggers hating me and having my authority questioned/ignored constantly, most likely. I know that's what I did to all my floor monitors, nothing personal. yawn

As far as pay is concerned, I know there is some 'experience credit' given since I've worked as front end cashier. I only don't want them to throw in some technicality (i.e you don't have experience as a floor monitor and you would have made more starting out as a cashier).

Oh by the way you will be on a register 80% of your shift, if not more.

Makes not more than a cashier? Maybe in your division which sounds bad from the sound of that. Most make at least 3.50-5.00 an hour more than a cashier to start. And yah you're a slave to quevision which means constantly bothering other departments than arguing with their angry leads why you had their workers up on registers all day and writting up everyone. Have fun. Hopefully you actually do make more money but it all depends on the contract. Cashiers in my division start at minimum wage just like baggers..no way supervisors do.

Yeah in Atlanta division supervisors are paid precisely like cashiers. There used to be a 50c/hr premium (ditto for bookkeeper who is also just a cashier in terms of pay) but the last contract did away with it. Now it's only the backup who gets that and the lead gets the "real" money to make everybody's lives miserable but his or her own.

Suffice it to say the ATL division contract sucks and as a result it's very hard to get people to move up at least in my store.  They see the stress and want no part of it for same pay.

The list is all very true but left out putting up with micromanaging managers, a schedule writer who does crazy things and no call no shows.

If you work anywhere near a metro area or in one of the bigger divisions you know this isn't true. All supervisors at my store who have either transferred, temp'd with experience or were promoted are being paid almost $11.50 and hr plus the every 6 month 5 cent raise. Supervisors are generally considered Managers when the Co Floor Dpt Hd and the Main Floor Dpt Hd aren't present or only one is. You'll be doing most of what's on that list except you'll be expected to give breaks, hop on registers, deal with customers, help out cashiers ect. You're doing a Management position for part time pay and the supervisor position leads to accounting (unless you came from or double with that) and sooner or later full on management.
