Meat dept. BS

So there is this lazy ass cutter that I work with who I obviously cannot name. As anyone who has worked in the meat department would know, when you do trim you have to log it under the grinder log in the wic guns. Before it lets you finish logging your grinds it asks if the grinder was cleaned. To which you answer yes. meaning basically, you used it, you clean it. Only problem is this jackass ALWAYS leaves it for the closers (me) to do. Even though he logged it as cleaned. The other night I was very busy and barely had time to take a breath let alone do someone else's job for them. But I did because it's state law that the grinder gets clean because of health code and all that. I rushed it. It wasn't as clean as it should have been. So who gets written up? Me! I'm sorry but it isn't my job to clean the damn thing unless I was the one who used it. At least I tried to clean it. This jackass just left it. I feel like he should have been the one written up. Thoughts?

Grieve the write-up.  Speak to your union rep in the store.

If it is your job to clean the department even tho you didn't use the machine, then make sure it gets done right next time.

Yes, some coworkers suck.

This is nothing new and yes the night-time closer usually does clean it up in all markets. I have yet to find a market where the people actually break it down and clean it afterwards unless ecolab is coming. My advice is in the future when you're having to clean it you need to get some hawk degreaser and spray the **** out of it and let it set. I usually spray it with chlorinated cleaner next and let it sit even more. You also need to rotate the wheel to the get the underbelly of it.

If he's writing that he's cleaning it and he's not, he needs to be written up.

It's always the job of the closers to clean up - i get that. But if you get in trouble so should he.

I wouldn't have signed that without arguing that point at least.

Agree. I've always hated that mentality of "well, you're the closer, so you're responsible for everything that happened throughout the day." What bull $hit! It's everyone's responsibility to clean up after themselves.

Exactly. Closers have enough to deal with. We have to clean up after day shift as well as any late customers which at my store the closing shift is the rush shift. I get having to clean the saw room, but when you log that the grinder was cleaned it's YOUR job. Not mine. Cutters need to realize that and stop leaving everything to night shift.

At my store our grinder log has to be done a little differently. When it asks if the grinder is clean, you must select no. Then, you have 1 hour to take it apart and clean it and enter a record of grinder clean. Although no one usually does take the grinder apart until closing (unless there is an inspection coming), we still have to do it this way. I forgot to enter grinder clean once, and the store manager just told me to make sure I do that.

We used to just enter grinder clean when logging trimming the first time, until the district coordinator came and told us the "proper" way to do a grinder log.

I am in Delta division, not sure how it is done elsewhere.

I've been cleaning up for the last 8 years and I have no problems cleaning the grinder. It only takes 2 minutes to take apart and maybe 10 minutes to clean it. If he just does what I told him it won't be an issue in the future.

But you just said it, you've done it for 8 years.

It's not fair for the experienced employees to blame everything on the guy who's worked there for what...3 months?

I mean there needs to be some level of responsibility...

Yes, i'm an market assistant and in my years there very few actually break down the grinder. What it sounds like is he did a sloppy job at cleaning the grinder and is getting blamed for it because hes the one who cleaned it. Now, what I can base upon this is if he had never cleaned it before I wouldn't of written him up for it, but rather coach him and show him how I clean it.

That he didn't clean it, and lied by documenting that he had, are the only issues here.

I have a question. Do you work 7 days a week? I have a feeling the people who work the other 2 nights isn't complaining about having to wash it down. Just saying.

If you mean me, the OP, I work 6 days a week. Always close. It was my first time cleaning the grinder and I wasn't trained on how to do it. I guessed.

If that was your first time cleaning you should definitely fight it. Just take my advice on the clean up. I can help you even further.

What kind of grinder do you have?

Is it like the following:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-H0Nsy2ZyVM

or like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYRs3vAphgI

The reason I need to know is because there are different ways of cleaning it.

oh, well no wonder you did terrible on it. this explains the entire situation. You probably didn't even know how to drain it, but look no further. I will tell you how to take it apart piece by piece.

Step 1: Removing the Head

Take the wrench that is usually hanging next to the grinder and unscrew the head off. Make sure you have it unplugged or foot switch on with your foot not on the pedal.

Step 2: Remove the blade off and discard excess meat. remove the worm (drill bit) out of the grinder.

Step 3: There are 2 bolts holding the head on the grinder. Turn the wrench around and unscrew the lug nuts. The head will become lose and it will come off, please be careful not to drop it on your foot!

Step 4: It is optional to removing the rotating wheel in some markets, but there are 2 bolts on the outside as well that will remove them. Its best to hand wash these items.

Step 5: Locate the plug on the lower right side. Unplug it and start spraying the grinder down with chlorinated cleaner. I would recommend Hawk Degreaser too.

Step 6: Rinse and Sanitize.

Yea, but that doesn't do a damn thing to stop E COLI between cleansings. Which goes back to my whole point, if you stop and think for half a second. *SIGH*. I'll try once more.

EVERY body who uses the grinder should clean it. First person in, everybody after that person, closer. What are we doing here, launching the space shuttle? How much sense does it take to know contamination can build up between uses?

OP: From here on out, unless you run around naked with a sign hanging from your pubic hairs that reads F U C K KROGER, don't sign a damn thing.

Also, if Mr. Lazy ass, does it again, ask your manger or dept manager to follow you so you can show them the nasty unclean grinder, and the false documents saying it was "cleaned." Or take a pic on your phone and show it to them if you can along with false documentation. He should be wrote up for that. That right there is a MAJOR health violation.

Correct....the grinder should be cleaned after whoever used it last. That is falsification when you check the grinder log that you cleaned it after grind when in fact you did not. He should of been written up or warned. The closer is also responsible for cleaning at night, since he was too new, he should have been just warned and coached how to clean it properly. Fight the write-up! I've heard of meat cutters getting written up and/or suspended over stuff like this in the past. CYA....plain and simple.

If some snot nose night c(loser) asked me why I logged it clean and didn't clean it I would say I just won't log it as cleaned and if you don't log it as cleaned, 1. write up 2. 1 day 3. 3 days 4. 5 days and the fifth time you're fired.  Simple and sweet my friend.

^And this is the problem. Douchebags like you think that because you've worked in retail since 1948 that you have the right to treat someone else like ****.

They have you guys clean the grinder after EACH and every time it's used? Here, whoever is scheduled as closer/cleaner is the one that cleans it. And it's not uncommon to be out doing normal stocking duties, and have a customer come up with nice lean roast, and ask to have it ground. We take it back, cut it into smaller chunks and throw it in the grinder. Then we wash our hands and wrap it up. Then go back to what we were doing.

I can't imagine having to take the grinder out of the cooler, take the worm, cutter and die out, wash and sanitize, then reassemble and move it back into the cooler. for EVERY time it's used.

You're an ass and deserve to be fired. I have worked closing and day shifts as well as being in training to be a cutter and by FAR closing is the hardest and most stressful shift. We don't have time to clean up YOUR messes. Learn to do your own job or leave. Simple and sweet my friend.

So before you had to log it in the gun did the night person clean the grinder?
