I joined the union two weeks ago. Last week they took out $9 for dues and $5 for init. This week I made less, but they took out $18 for dues and $5 for init. Is that how it is supposed to be, or is something wrong?
That is how it works, $5 is for joining the union the fee is actually $100, they will take $5 for 20 weeks until it is payed off. The $9 a week is your union dues and it is taken out weekly. Welcome to the real world.
No if you look at the pay stub they add the $9 from last week to the $9 from this week and it will equal $18, a little confusing until you get use to how the pay stub works
Actually it's $180 to join the union in my district...I'm s till paying it and I was hired in July.
I think it sucks that teenagers who have part time minimum wage jobs need to pay more than $100 in initiation fees to a union. I understand the benefits of being in the union, but those fees should be put off until the employee either gets a significant raise or full time hours.
Minimum wage earners shouldn't be burdened with this.
I agree... I'm minimum wage and I'm getting $5 taken out for my initiation fee (still - hired in June) and $10.44 taken out for dues! $180 initiation fee. I get almost $80 total taken out of my paycheck each week. I have to constantly borrow money so I can pay my 2 bills (dentist bill and phone bill). I'm making so much less than minimum wage but in my contract it says if I don't remain in the union I will be fired.

it's MUCH worse in the beginning than, say, a year in. Once you finish paying off the init and you actually get insurance it's not too bad as you can use the thing you're paying for.
