Company attitude toward nursing moms
Permalink

I'm currently working at a store in the Southwest division and expecting my second child to be born this July. Right now, I have my heart set on breastfeeding exclusively during my leave, and pumping after I return to work. I know there are laws in place to protect the rights of breastfeeding women on the job, but has anyone encountered this situation in a store? Is there a written or unwritten policy regarding this at Kroger? Any experiences you could share?

I haven't brought up the topic with my boss yet, but I'm curious to hear what others have encountered.

How about breastfeeding your baby before or after you go to the store.  So let me get this straight a breastfeeding mother will go to a store and before she begins shopping will sit and begin breastfeeding or will have a cart full of groceries and start breastfeeding.  How about breastfeeding in private?  I think it's just to draw attention to yourselves and nothing more.

I'm not talking from a shoppers perspective, but from an employee's perspective. Given the ignorance of your comment, you know nothing about breastfeeding. Are there any informed posters out there who can comment?

I would say, if you want to pump, so do but go into the restroom.

I'm a female, so don't say this is sexist.

I don't think anyone needs to be sitting in the breakroom and having you just be um...out in the open. lol
Besides wouldn't it be awkward for you too? lol

We have a breast feeding mom that goes to our meeting room and locks the dwhen when she is on lunch or break to breast Fred. I hope your manager can see that Kroger can make this happen.

We have a woman at my store who pumps.  They put her in an office with black paper over the windows.  I think she gets an extra break to do it, but I'm not sure.

i agree 1000%. Breast feeding is NOT to draw attention to oneself. Neither is pumping. Just make sure you label the milk as Breastmilk for baby. DO NOT TOUCH, OR TASTE! You never know how many dumb asses will try it.

I didn't think about doing it in an office...that would make sense, lol.

But getting an extra break, I hope they schedule her for that break then because a lot of employees don't even get their one break when they should get 2. Of course that's a Kroger problem, not her fault :P

Thanks for all your responses. I'll have to see if I can nab an office or add a lock to the conference room. I thought I'd end up relegated to the restroom, but we only have one set of restrooms (just 2 stalls) in the whole store for use by employees and customers. I'm sure someone would be bound to complain about me occupying a stall for too long.

Thanks also for the heads up on labeling the milk bottles. People can be so nosey and weird sometimes!
