Promoted? I don't want a promotion.

Well, i'm being told by my market manager they're wanting to pull me out of the market and get my own meat market. I at this time have no interest in running a meat market with all the stress and heartache of it. Yes, I do eventually want to run one and yeah the money is good at $18 / hr but its not worth the trouble. I'm thinking i've delayed it by saying that there are things I don't know and need to learn before doing something like this. I'm hoping to delay it for at least a while longer.

If you are currently an existing Assistant Meat Department Manager, the company has the expectation that you will continue to progress and become a Meat Department Manager at some point.  An unwritten company policy is that if the need is there and they feel you are ready to take on the task, they will ask you to take a promotion.  If this is the first time they are asking you and you genuinely feel you are not ready then it's okay to say "no" and turn it down this once with your reason(s). If the company has already asked you several/multiple times, just don't make a habit of saying "no" too often, or any more for that matter, because they want to see people progress in order to open up a spot for others to start training as Assistants as well. They do not like seeing people make careers of being Assistant Department Managers...

Here's the deal. Promotions use to be really nice to get years ago, along with getting the top pay with that. Of course....along with all that, comes all the responsibility with being the Meat Market Manager. There are some questions to ask yourself first, before you take that direction. Do you yourself think you're qualified to run the dept, writing a schedule, dealing with those employees who whine about their schedules, all the key retail bull crap, ordering, monthly inventory, health safety compliance, shrink, conversing with the higher ups that stroll through your store, dealing with the micro managing of store management, office politics, the list goes on and on. Investigate first on what stores in your area have the opening, why do I mention this you may ask, it's because there may be stores that can't keep good Meat Managers at their location because their driving them off or forcing them out. Money is really nice but so is your sanity at the end of the day. I have seen Assistants promoted only to be set up to fail. There is no careers or future in the meat industry anymore unless you are still in the game from 20 plus years ago and are tight with the Union. These days, unfortunately, you are just a number to them and it is now just a job. This company has lost a lot of great Meat Managers through the years....at no fault of their only. With all that being said, maybe you will get promoted, get to work at a nice store and more importantly, be appreciated by your store management and the company of course if you can deliver and do a great job! A lot to consider before you take that step but best of luck on whatever you decide.

I've only have been a Market Assistant for 3 years now, so it wasn't long ago that I was promoted. I told my market manager that i'm not going to be setup for failure because i'm not trained for certain things. I've written schedules before, but have never operated the back-end of e-schedule. I've never have done an inventory before and there are things I feel that i'm missing before moving up.

This, so much this! Honestly, I have a feeling of the two stores they are looking at putting people in AC's district. Both have deep rooted issues that create a revolving door atmosphere that see new market managers yearly for the past 4 years. If you do not feel comfortable with inventory, you need to speak now, since shrink/MD effective is THE metric D10 is primarily looking at, followed by everyday store conditions, key retailing, and OOS position. It's doable, but not easy as you will not only have over come the mentality of your crew, but the mentality of the store, and the mentality the management that is combating store mentality in an abrasive way.
