I'm employed at a Mid-Atlantic store working in the bakery as a cake decorator/floor filler. There is another store fairly close (3 miles away) to us closing at the end of March. A lot of full time people are worried that employees from that store will come over here and take our hours when it officially closes. My question is, has anyone on this forum ever dealt with a situation like this before? In addition, do the employees at the closing store get to have a say in where they will be moved to? I have talked to a current deli worker there (he happens to be my future brother-in-law) and he says they haven't been told anything about what will happen. He also said that night crew and many others are basically on temporary leave since the store is practically empty now.
It's all going to be based on seniority. The most senior employee within each job classification will have a choice as to which store they want to transfer to. Less senior employees will probably be given a couple choices. Everyone else will probably be told where they're going since everyone can't transfer to the same store. Some stores might only be able to take a few employees. Others will probably take more. If anyone tranfers to your store, seniority will prevail.
I know it sucks for newer people, but yes it does go by seniority and your hours can be taken by older employees. When a nearby store close to me closed for a remodel, quite a few of their people came to my store, and a lot of our people lost their hours because they had a lot of long term people.
Because they gutted the store. It was a complete remodel - floors, equipment, coolers, freezers, literally everything was replaced.
Our remodel is a complete remodel but we've stayed open. They did add on to the building which helps. They simply close off one section at a time and move the stuff from that section to somewhere else. When that section is completed, they start on another section. Our produce people have had their prep room and cooler moved three times already. And they're not done yet.

Maybe in some states the law is to close during a remodel.
