To all Georgia UFCW local 1996 members I would like to ask please vote No on this contract they want. They are taking away insurance for people that are married,The employee is cover there husband or wife is not covered at all.the contract only last 3 years and we only get twenty five cents a year. This means fuel and starbucks gets screwed again on pay.Top pay for full time is 11.00 dollars a hour and store cashier make 1440 its bs.
How do you have this information? it's not on the union website even though it claims they included it with the voting dates, times and locations.
dropping insurance for employee spouses will save kroger lots of money going forward and the route many companies have taken thanks to ObamaCare. Kroger really will become a company of stores staffed with nothing but single parents, high school students and college kids.
A spouse will still need insurance under the law so they'll be forced into a health care exchange and they better find a way to afford it.
I rolled my eyes at ufcw claiming negotiations were made extra difficult due to economic conditions. really? I thought it was all sunshine and roses six years into Obama's reign and Kroger's always telling Wall Street it's doing very, very well.
only dues paying union members can vote. really the 2010 contract was already terrible in local 1996 compared to other places and each succeeding contract gets worse.

Isnt that the age group there after 17yr olds, high school and college students. At the store i work at there are a BUNCH of them working on the front end. The ones that have been there longer are managers, but the rest fit that group of young teens to college students.

How I have this information is because I'm close to someone of someone that has a friend on the negation committee.. So he gave me a copy of the contract the Union and Kroger came to terms on they was releasing the contract information Monday 3/17/14 which all the stores should have a copy of and you was to get a copy of all the employees.
But yea they are even put a nice fat clause for department head to remove them if the management wish fast without any say so or input from the employee. The wording reads in contract that Dispute Procedure change for suspended pending employee.Effective 1/1/2015 automatic move to step 3 of the dispute procedure. For any Department Manager that steps down or is removed for performance reasons only, the associate must wait a minimum of one (1) year before applying for another Department Manager postion,The time frame can be shortened if there is agreement between the company and the union..
So say you are a department head right and a new Unit Manager comes in he hates how you did things the way your old Unit Manager liked before, Then he has a right to bust you down on his so called Performance issues or the Unit Just didn't like you for any reason they will use this to bust you down for again Performance issues ..This wording is a catch all wording if you get what I'm saying, Seniority doesn't mean nothing also as Department Head in this contract when you want to reapply for another department your going to need to wait a year before you can even do that. As it stands now that doesn't apply if you get busted down or ask to step down you can reapply asap in another store if its open to you.
For the Spouse Health here is the wording for that.
Effective 1/1/15 -Spouses whoare enrolled in coverage durning the 2014 calendar year and are still actively covered as of November 30, 2014 and who do not have access to Employer sponsored coverage will receive a one-time lump sum Bonus of $1500.00 less applicable taxes to be paid on December 5, 2014 to assist in transition of healthcare coverage.
Hope you like your spouse not to have insurance if you vote for this and you cannot pay for Obama care because it will cost way to much and Kroger doesn't want to give us a raise to pay for our love ones insurance. which the raise is only tops out at 0.75 raise for life of this contract of 3 years.
The way I see it if we are going to need to pay for spouse insurance Kroger needs to raise the amount we get paid to pay for this not no 0.75,, no way that will cover you if your only a clerks pay.

1. Of course Kroger wants to save money. Just think of the shareholders!!! D:
2. You know that "economic conditions" excuse is BS when Wall Street's doing much better than before the recession.
saw it today. it's just as described here. there's no pay increase except for the top rate. there's a new cheese lead who gets a premium. there's a new clause dealing with people having three weeks or more vacation. that clause about being removed for performance reasons should disturb anybody currently or thinking of becoming a dept head.
Well I say these Terms are worse than the last contract its getting to a point were we only have nothing to bargin with at all.Sooner or later we will need to Strike just to get back what we gave up..People in Local 1996 are to scared to Strike and just want a pay check each week not thinking of what it will cost them in the long term.Like if this goes throught we will need for spousal health care more and we have no real raise .So we keep bargning ourselves in a corner.Local 1996 needs to Strike and call Kroger at its own game see how much money they will lose if we are on work stopage bet it will cost them more money then they are willing to give us in these terms if you shutdown Georgia and SC stores that local 1996 is part of.If the union members didnt know this but the Atlanta Division makes the most money then any other Division so Kroger is being cheap as always.I'm to the point of trying get a Wildcat Strike going because the Union is laying down and taking this stuff.I know at my store a lot of people are not happy with the terms that have been offered.
The contracts are getting worse country-wide. Just remember, it's all the union members supporting them. Specifically, it's the one's who's been there the longest.
Well we voted it down, Thank God, but unless we vote in a new governing body and president for 1996 we will never get anything good from a contract. haha the best part is if you read Lomax's cover letter asking us to vote yes on this crappy contract because its the best we could possibly get it completely contradicts Lucia's letter to the employees regarding the FY 2013. Lucia says we had a record year and reached some huge goals but Lomax paints a picture of the economy from the recession.
kroger in atlanta area voted today.and the store mangers are making everyone afraid of voting no.by telling them they will lock us out from now til sept ..haha they cant afford to do that.1996 is a bull**** union they are not for us they are for team kroger.if the contract passes i want Out!! and no more union dues for me..

Easy, Just look at how ridiculous bills pass through Congress. Same process.
All jokes aside, most likely it's the hardliners who won't be affected were the ones who turned out to vote. The ones who would be impacted (i.e. the new hires) are to busy with school/other job to be able to.
Dropping spouse coverage is just the start of losing benefits to come. Pretty soon there will be no such thing as family coverage. No coverage for working part time. Send all part timers to the Obamacare. In a few years most companies will not offer insurance as a benefit. All employees will have to buy Obamacare.

I'm hoping by then that joker is out of office and Obamacare will just be a painful memory.
The reason for the spousal coverage cut is that these union plans will qualify as a plan where the premium price is over that obamacare says the premium can be in 2016 and kroger will have to pay the excise tax penalty which is 40 percent of the difference in what the plan premium is and what the government says it cannot be over. This is one way to get in line with that cost to not pay the tax penalty per employee. You should look for more cuts to benefits in the future like dropping vision coverage or not pay as much as it does now. Obamacare does not recognize a spouse as a dependent because most spouses are not stay at home mothers and where they work can offer them coverage which might not be as good as what Kroger has.
Local 1996 can not afford to go on strike. They do not have a strike fund. Thus, they can not pay union members to picket. That's why the Union Reps are always in the stores during contract negotiations scaring everyone to vote yes on ****ty contracts. It's pathetic and so is the Local 1996 Union President.
