Hours Cut
Permalink

I just recently switched from Nutrition to Produce Department, and in my first week of work, my hours were cut from 40 to 16. Could this be because of training? Or am I able to pick up some shifts in Nutrition while doing Produce? Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, you went from a mini-department that's normally understaffed (hence your 40 hours) to a major department that gets the same BS rations as the other departments, with the dozen or so employees in that department being full time (or at least trying to).

If worse comes to worse, you may have to bump someone for their hours. How long have you been with the company?
If your "fresh" still, then you may have to take what's given you and try to pick up any stray hours no one wants. If you've been there a while you can see if you can bump someone for their hours.

Bumping might not even be an option. Some contracts require you to swap the entire week with the other employee, which means you both have to be able to do all jobs the other is scheduled for and cannot violate any availability.

Also, the deadline to bump would have been the cutoff time for schedule changes (often 24 hours after posting)

I just got approved for picking up a co-workers shift, 8-4 this wednesday which will put me up to 24 hours this week. if this becomes a recurring thing, then i'm probably going to be scraping from the bottom of the barrel for hours. still, its better than nothing until i can find a web design job.

if  you are full time, it cant happen. but if ur listed as part time. they can do it. each department has its own hours. but if u can do the job in other department u can pull hours if someone has more than u do with less seniority . management doesn't like it, but u can do it. good luck.  if nothing else go to ur union rep. in the store they can advise the best route to take.
