Meat cutter?

My department is asking if I want meat cutter training. I work in the meat/seafood dept. but am not currently a cutter and I make min. wage. If I say yes, how long does training take? How much do cutters make? Do I get cutter pay during training?

Do you want meat cutter training?  You won't get cutter pay during training.  At some point the company will give you a cutting test which no one should fail.  Just impress your dept head and asst. and the other meat cutters.

Not sure if I want it. That's why I'm asking about it. I need to know if the training length is long or short and if the pay increase is significant enough for it to be worth it.

It should be in the contract book.  It could take 6 months but you will always learn how to be a better meat cutter after that.

Gonna vary by state, here you have train at work and go to a class once a week.  Cutter pay is good and its a skill you can take with you.  I had the opportunity a few years ago and didn't apply, I figured I would be gone, but it didn't turn out that way.  Just because your doing it, doesn't mean you'll be there forever.

I'd take the opportunity if I were you. Even if you don't plan on staying there forever, it'd be a decent skill to fall back on if you need to. But Idk what the pay difference is.

This time of year managers get all about "cross training" so they can cover vacations with cheap labor.  Make sure this is a real opportunity to become a cutter not just play one for a few weeks this summer.  I guess it would be harder for meat cutting, but they will get courtesy clerks to cover vacations in produce and never make 'em real clerks.  Just a heads up.
