How badly did I call in sick wrong?

I'm asking this because I just called in an hour prior to my shift, however nobody sounded happy about it. I also had to call the service desk because I couldn't remember the correct number, and so was transferred twice. When I got to the final one, they just asked for my name and hung up after telling me to hang on. I only live about a minute away from work, so I tend to get as much sleep as I can, and didn't realize until after breakfast that I had some stomach problems..... unfortunately. Should I be calling in earlier than that? I'm really worried about job security just by upset they sounded, but I honestly don't see what I can do about it at this point. I'm sick as of the moment so it's not like I can go in as a replacement for someone else today, and they're upset about me being sick at all or maybe calling too late. Is it usual for them to just hang up on you after calling in?

Usually just call in as early as you can if you know you'll be sick so that your boss can find someone to replace you for the day. Bring in a doctor's note, especially if you're on probation. It is unusual for them to just hang up on you, and if your store manager did that then go ask him why. If he says some bull**** like, "I don't have time to deal with a bunch of hooky playing jackasses," then meet with your district manager. The district managers hate whenever their stores have high turnover rates when they have to give you like $200+ for training hours alone, and they do not like store managers with attitude problems.

Well I mean that's part of why I think they weren't happy; the timing I mean. I was scheduled for 12 or 12:30 today, I called at 11. However I only woke up at 10. I live only a minute away so I figured I could use the extra time for sleep, so setting the alarm for 10 instead of something normal like say.... 8 looked like a good idea to me. Me losing breakfast due to being sick wasn't part of the plan, obviously. Regardless, it seems to have put me in a bad position. The manager hasn't seemed like much of a bad person either, always being cheerful and well mannered to employees from what I've seen.

I am on the store's 90 day period however, as the store itself only just recently opened up. Is it really worth it to spend money on a visit to the doctor just to get a note? I can't say that having some form of a stomach bug really makes me feel inclined to spend money on that just to have job security. I'm already being paid a small amount (some pay is better than none though) , and student loans aren't cheap. Then again I guess it would pay off in the long run, since I really need to keep this job. cry

What is your job position?

What state are you in?

It depends on the contract how far ahead of schedule you need to call in.  At my store in Mi, we need to call in an hour before our shift.  That's it.  Call in, say you are sick and won't be able to work.  Hang up.  If there is a store manager in the building, anyone calling in has to speak with the store manager directly.

They need an hour to find a replacement for you.

More than likely, the customer service person was busy helping raging customers and needed to get back to that quick so they had to be short with you.

Don't apologize for missing a day.  They do not want you puking on customers.  Just say you are doing better if anyone asks.

You being a new person, I do not think one call in will cause you issues.  It depends on how your store manager is.  Do not make it a habit when you make is past probation tho.

You're fine, just try to give more notice in the future.

Sometimes it's not possible to give advanced notice.  I don't even get up until a half hour before I have to be at work.

I always thought you had to give a 2 hour notice.

Read your contract.  Some regions it is a 2 hour notice.

Some don't even specify a time frame

You don't even know when you were supposed to go in.  Figure it out.  Be more responsible.  Where I'm at two hours is what we're supposed to give and I'll tell you two hours is not enough most times.

I recorded two times. The sheet in the store said 12, eschedule said 12:30. Regardless of which one takes priority (although I'm leaning towards in-store time taking priority) I would have shown up at 12 had I not been sick. I'm being as responsible as I can here.

in store always takes priority over eschedule

it sucks when people on the other side of the phone act the way the do.  then you worry about it for the rest of the day.  my advice is when they hang up like that - call back and chew them out! let them know straight up that "look I am sick damn it and don't appreciate being treated like sh+t". I've done it a few times and always get my point across well & get an apology.

as far as you - don't sweat it.  they wont remember what occurred 2 hours ago let alone yesterday.  but u sound like you have true feelings and compassion.  harden up some when you've been dissed and give them your true feelings on the matter

Contract book says MUST call within 4 hours of shift and can only miss 2 days without doctor not and anything after that must have a doctor not or it is un excused absence
