Depends on your store size. Ours is scheduled 45 hours a week and works up to 50 I'd guess.

My store has 3 co's, they do 9-10 hour shifts so i'd say they do maybe 50 hours a week.

Here's a tip.  As a long time employee, I've learned the best managers are the ones who don't try to micro-manage everything.  Let the department heads and the employees do their jobs with as little interuption as possible.  If there is a problem, then step in and fix it,  but don't go in and try to tell people who have been their jobs for ten years or more that they aren't doing it right.  As long as the work gets done, that's all that matters.

 Don't answer that question.

Good luck with the new job.

I'd say in a 9 hour shift you might get 3 hours out of one.

It varies by store and volume, it seems. Where I'm at, in addition to the store manager, we have three co-managers, and typically a co-manager works around ten hours. If the store manager opens, then a co-manager will work 10:00AM-8:00PM, roughly, and another will work 1:00PM-11:00PM, again roughly. Sometimes, all three co-managers plus the store manager are there, so most of the time, a co-manager will get two days off a week. Holiday weeks or weeks where there is a big sales event coming up, like Mother's Day, the shifts are longer and there is obviously a lot more work management is responsible for and needs to get done - usually because corporate won't give the necessary extra hours to adequately prepare for the holiday or event.

At any rate, good luck, and be sure to be firm, but understanding, with those under you. Always listen as long as you feel the one you're listening to is a honest, hard-working employee.

At one point my store had 6 co's and 1 store manager since we are a million dollar store. Now we have 2 co's and a store manager. Needless to say, their shifts have gotten longer and they drink a lot of Red Bulls now.

THIS.  You'll be trained in the different departments but do not assume that makes you an expert.  Listen to your knowledgable people in the depts.  We have one jackass who rides the front end as a micromanager but knows little more than a recent hire.  He'll watch the cameras then call and deliver edicts from on high that are disconnected from reality and the needs on the floor.  No one likes working with him.  All he does is distract and cause excess stress.  My thought is if you're fussing at us we're not helping our customers. He'll even fuss at us about what others are doing in front of customers which is just rude and unnecessary.  Makes me sick.

Yep, these co-managers and PICs get some training and maybe do it for a day, but they don't know squat.  I used to cut fruit and got to train to managers on how to do it.  They were always really slow and never took it seriously.  There overall attitude was that they were learning to do it so they would know if service department employees were lying about not being able to get work done.  Not that when managers go to do it for a day, they were even close to standards.  Case would always be empty the next day.  Thank god I don't cut fruit anymore.

Most of the young managers seem to treat people like hell and act like they're hot stuff.  Guess what?  You still stink.  The worst ones are always in there twenties and have only worked for kroger.  No perspective on life.  Too serious.  Pulled a display of bell peppers (not a reeffer display) at 9:45 (we close at 11) and got told to put it back up, by our just promoted closing manager.  Why?  Because.  Never mind I've got to close down the department.  Then she got mad that I hadn't filled the bulk mushrooms up.  I topped 'em off and when the boss wanted a word about it the next day?  I did what I was told.  She got an earful from my manager.  Made me chuckle.

College grads are a bit better, they're either in the office or in the back driving the forklift.  Don't wanna risk being seen on the floor by people they know.  Shouldn't have partied so hard in school.

The key is having a great store manager that tells the co-managers to chill out on the micromanaging or you will piss everyone off and they won't do crap for you or respect you. Every co manager has that first few months where they think they are going to take over Kroger...then reality kicks in.

Promoted to meat dept? I'd hate to work in mine. No pay bump, freezer's a ****ing mess, and the old cutters are too lazy to clean their own damn knives. Oh and working before midnight means dealin with customers.

Ya I'm talking about way back in the day when meat dept was a good job to have. But things that you're saying that's part of the reasons why kroger and other places pay nothing because lazy people like them and the useless union. These guys would work a lot harder if their pay was based if their work and their review

As a Co-Manager in the Atlanta Division I work 60+ hours a week as a NORMAL week. This week the only other Co in my store is on vacation so my boss, the Unit manager is worked 7 days, about 70 hours and I'm scheduled about 65 hours. But I always work more than that, I get to work earlier than what I'm scheduled. Over the last 8 weeks I've only had 2 weeks where I have gotten 2 days off. The other weeks I've worked 7 full days, 6 full days and maybe a half day as the seventh. For me a full day is minimum 10 hour shift, but I always get there 30 minutes early so I can check my e-mails in peace. We are "supposed" to work 50 hours but that's a joke, that NEVER happens. It's almost impossible with what they expect manager's to do in stores.
