"Taste of Mexico: Coming to Your Store this June

This June, our customers wont need to hop on a plane to visit our neighbors to the south. They will simply need to stop in any one of the Kroger family of stores for their passport to a fiesta with the Taste of Mexico, a storewide event running June 4 to 24.

As part of the Taste of Mexico our first in a series of in-store Savor World Flavor World Cuisine Celebrations we will be offering a variety of special Mexican-inspired food, products and events for our customers throughout our stores. From churros in our Bakery to quesadilla makers in our Drug/GM department, everyone is getting in on the fun for our biggest company-wide merchandising event in the history of Kroger!

Traditional Mexican food is one of the fastest growing food trends in the U.S. and will be enjoyed by all of our customers, not just the Hispanic population.

This is our opportunity to re-ignite our customers passion for food, strengthen our reputation as food experts and create a fun shopping experience. Lets strive to be the best place to shop for our customers.

Some of the fun events that will be taking place

Taste of Mexico Store Showcase Contest on Yodel: We are looking to you to bring Taste of Mexico to life. To encourage and support your local efforts, we are conducting a division and a company-wide Store Showcase Contest on Yodel. Check with your management team to learn more about your division contest. One winner from each division will then be submitted into the company-wide contest for a chance at the grand prize of $3,000 for your store!

Associate Samplings: Your store will be holding special sampling events for associates only, so you can savor the flavor of the Taste of Mexico and tell our customers about your favorites.  Other materials, including recipes, will help you talk about this special event with our customers.

Customer Samplings: Delightful Discoveries will be hosting customer sampling events on several weekends during the event. Our customers will enjoy a number of delicious, traditional Mexican dishes, and will be able to pick up the recipes, and ingredients, of the ones they love.

Item of the Day: Be sure to check out the Associate Communications group on Yodel from June 4-24 for a Taste of Mexico Item of the Day. Each day, we will be featuring a new great product that we are offering to our customers. Visit and learn more about what is on our shelves.

Be on the lookout for dates and information for these events and others. See you store manager for details. And get ready to enjoy a Taste of Mexico.

Vamos a divertirnos!

(Lets have some fun!)"

... Guess what else is coming to your store this June? New uniforms designed specifically for this event. New uniforms that we will all wear for three weeks and never wear ever again, like those (in my opinion) horrible Refresh t-shirts. What Kroger is doing here sort of reminds me of what Central Market does where a certain type of food or culture will be showcased for a period of time. I guess it works pretty well for Central Market, but Central Market is a higher-priced store that caters to more financially well off customers, so whether or not this appeals to the average Kroger customer, I guess we'll all find out... while wearing our new, oh so cleverly designed uniforms.

Will that be like the time when they gave us free ice cream and pasta sauce?

Yeah.. we started setting up our special display for this a few days ago.

This does beg the question, though, and I know it's slightly off topic, but what is the deal with the PSAs that play overhead about the Avocados from Mexico?

Why is it so damn important that it's emphasized that they are FROM MEXICO?  They say it several times.  Some kind of predictive programming or something.  It's unnerving.

Probably because guacamole is considered Mexican food and they probably think if consumers here that the avocados are from Mexico, they'll be more likely to buy it. Because they can make more authentic guacamole or something.

We're doing that here too but it's in a couple weeks I think. Didn't know we are getting special shirts for it. But apparently if this one goes well we're doing other countries too?

Is Kroger trying to lure in the Hispanic market? They're much more loyal to their mom and pop shops and farmer markets. I think I'd rather hang myself than wear another dumbass T-shirt that Kroger spent millions of dollars on.

I liked the tshirts.  They look goofy, but I kept cooler and that's always a plus in the summer.

$3,000 for just one store out of the entire company?  The company takes in billions of dollars a year and they're only willing to part with $3,000?

And you know that the average store has no chance at it. It'll go to some huge marketplace that has 100 FE employees and has time to set up some extravagant display while the average 70k a day stores who bust their butts to make goals get nothing.

It is unnerving! I agree we should support LOCAL farmers and products of the USA.  If this was a beneficial two-way street of trade, which it is NOT thanks to NAFTA and other bogus trade agreements, I could deal with it. BUT with the lack of regulations in Mexico and allowing Mexican National truck drivers to bring produce to the US, formerly only US truckers could do so, we are displacing more American workers.  I have shopped at king soopers forever but will now shop elsewhere. I'm tired of having a hard time finding American products in an American franchise in the USA.
