We will call her "Egg". TL;DR: Co-worker sucks at her job, have limited power over her fate - what can I do?
Egg is a nice person with bad work qualities.
* Can create conversation, but some are uncomfortable to customers; such as active flirting. - Note: Is married. - Is part of this list due to customer's anti-body language to conversation(s) * Calls in (at least) once a week. - includes constant late days due to hospital visits - has discussed pre-planned sick days (during holiday) * Gets upset about having to get carts (as a CC), because she states she has a medical condition: has no sweat glands. - No doctor's note - Has (literally) cried to HR about cart-fetching - Asks to be permanent checker * Is a bad checker. - Has lowest CCG's - Messes up (badly) 1 WIC check a week. - includes: pink ink, light blue ink, multiple unsigned checks, missing information and/or receipts. * Tries to avoid restroom cleaning due to a rash she had when she was first hired. - Thinks she is allergic to cleaning chemicals - Requires her own personal cleaning gloves
We can and have coached, attempted retraining, and shrugged off all that (I) can bare. I don't think this job is for her anymore... I had three personal phone calls from the store today because they were trying to prepare three WIC checks from her register today, and no... she is not new to our store. Egg has gone through plenty of on hand training with these transactions.
Higher manager's brush her off because it is easier to hope that she can do better then to rid of a person. What can I do? Is there anything I can do?
I dunno about what you can do yourself, but the messed up wic checks alone would be enough for termination if they're actually as bad as you say. Each one messed up would be enough for a writeup and a few of those are enough for termination easily.

Only if you're sent to cashier CBT sessions, which most promoted baggers are not. Everyone messes up a WIC now and then. It's like solving a rubik's cube.
Yeah messing up a WIC check occasionally isn't really that big of a deal, the whole system is a nightmare to deal with. The other stuff is pretty ridiculous though.
Also, if a person doesn't have sweat glands properly developed (caused by ectodermal dysplasia most of the time) they wouldn't really be able to work at a grocery store. The law only requires reasonable accommodation in its non-discrimination clauses.

No, the repeated coaching more than counts as enough history and some CBTs that cover less than coaching are not a prerequisite for any writeup I can think of.
Damn, haven't seen one of those. Our WIC payments here are done electronically via card.
So, anyone, enlighten me on what goes down with these WIC checks.
You had to hit WIC twice, make sure the items that the customer had was on the wic check, scan them, get the customer to sign the thing, then run the check through the machine. Easy as long as you know what is and isn't a wic item.

WIC -> WIC -> ID check -> customer signs -> ring items in order they appear on WIC check -> deal with random items that qualify ringing as non-WIC items -> 2/price check tender -> enter voucher dates -> frank WIC check -> write price in box -> throw in till
they need to start requiring a doctor's note and management may need to do a CA on the call outs. refusing to do things you know are part of your job is something your dept head can do as a note to file.
i don't see why they'd call you about the WIC checks. in accounting you can't exactly sign for a customer. you're only supposed to stamp them. if it was franked the wrong amount you can fix it but if she scanned the wrong stuff you can't go back and change that.
maybe you could write in the amount the check was franked for if the cashier forgot to write it but that might not be allowed.
WIC paper checks are a mess. they're vague enjoy to be confusing yet also precise enough to be wrong. there's no gallon of lactaid, it's slightly less than that but hey it scans fine. like I said, it's a mess.
the cards can't be worse because tens of millions have been lost on WIC checks done wrong. when they don't pay for errors, that's a loss to the store and, really, could be counted as a loss against the cashier since their number is on the back.
customers will argue about what they were prescribed by the WIC office oh I don't want whole milk, i never get whole milk, blah, blah. that's not in our control.
there's also two procedures, one for the WIC checks with listed items and one for cash value vouchers for fruit and produce. they are run differently and it's just more confusing.
there's a CBT on WIC I think it's under general, plus they can make her do a sign-off which our district does every year anyway so they can document she's been "trained."
and lastly idiots in store trying to fill holes will put the wrong items in a WIC item area and piss off customers and confuse anyone trying to find the right item.

Thank God for electronic WIC's then.
Here they just insert their card in a slot underneath the keypad. It pays for any qualifying items on their card. Everything else can be settled with another payment method and/or can be removed from the order. The receipt printer also prints out every qualifying item they have in their card before the transaction is complete along with items that the WIC paid for. If a customer has any disputes we just have to show them what they were given and it becomes their problem.

That sounds awesome. We're still stuck with checks. Our system won't let us scan the wrong item, but people still wanna argue, that safeway lets 'em get coco puffs or doritos on their wic, so why can't we?
It's always nice when a customer makes a direct complaint about being uncomfortable with how she speaks to them and it's written out and signed by the cashier who the customer spoke with and it's hanging in the desk to be looked at. Just sayin'. ;p

LOL I've had this argument so many times. "Why don't you override it? They did last time!"
Um because I'm not overriding a damn thing!
I also liked hearing, "I wish you didn't know the rules!"
I love "they did that last time" or "you did that before" on stuff I know damn well I don't do like bypass security prompts on Western Union.

Oh God, this always comes from the ancient check writers. "When did you start requiring IDs for checks????" "Uh, years ago ma'am."
