Should I have said anything?

Just today I started early at work (3:40 am).  My lunch was scheduled at 8:00 am, I got caught helping a customer shop (he was legally blind) and didn't get to go to my lynch until 9:35 am. I told my boss I was super late to lunch. She told me just go to lunch and not clock out or in. She'd fix it. but had I kept quiet would I have scored some OT? Should i have kept my mouth shut and went for the OT? It's not like this happens all the time so it's not that big of a deal in my opinion...

I don't think you would have accrued overtime, no. Your manager will probably just give you an override form to fill out later.

Your boss told you wrong.  Always clock out for your breaks and lunches, unless the timeclock is broken.   By taking a lunch and not clocking out for it, you're basically stealing time.  You can be fired for it.  Get with your time and attendance person and make sure the hours you've worked is correct.

Umm, no, it's not always. Doing so will only piss off whoever does payroll in your store.

You only clock out for breaks/lunches if it's store policy. Clocking out of a break that you're supposed to be paid for isn't a good thing. Not for you, and neither for the store.

Next time you run behind, just let your department head or a member of management know. They'll give you the best option you have, and/or at least you'll know that you've given notice to whoever has any power in the store.

I always clock my lunches. I'd never let payroll try to guess my hours. These people think a quarter of an hour is equal to 25 minutes.

Right, but in other stores, you're not supposed to clock in/out since it's part of your 8-hour scheduled shift per contract. Say, if I clocked out even for lunch, it won't let me back in unless I get an override and it would be treated as "another shift" and will be a pain in the neck for payroll. But like I said, it varies per contract and even per store. Do with what everyone in your store does. :D

My store doesn't seem to care whether you punch in or not for paid breaks.

However, if you're called to do something during your break (ex: 'Pizza' call 2161), it's best to be clocked out. ;)

Ohhhh **** the dreaded 2161. Is that the walky talky number of all store managers? I know co's can range from 2162 to 2166.

You should write down what time you went to lunch and what time you came back. Plus the reason just in case they throw a bitch fit. For example:

Original lunch period: 7:00am-8:00am
(Or whatever your contract dictates how long lunches are)

Actual Lunch period: 9:00-10:00
Reason: helping an impared customer shop

Make copied and hand one in to whomever does payroll (so they won't screw you out of pay), and one to management. Keep a copy for yourself to have proof in case they decide to screw you over.

Also was anyone else there to help out? If there was you should have gotten him/her to take over.

As for saying anything? A resounding YES! say something. Because you can and WILL be caught eventually. It might be nice to earn that extra cash, but management frowns upon paying OT if it's not necessary. At least that's how it is at my work

Yes, but they can have more numbers than that actually. My store has 2161-2169 and 2262-2265. Big store.

Never knew that all stores had the same manager/co numbers but that's cool.

Helpful to know in case I ever have to help out in another store :P

They have the same set of numbers yes, but that doesn't mean the same mgrs use the same numbered phones in different stores. You'd expect the store mgr to have 2151 in their office but they may use the handheld numbered 2167 as a matter of personal preference.
