Transfering from one store (and department) to another store (and department) Within state
Permalink

So a bit of background, i'm slightly new to krogers. I actually started in 2009 and quit because i moved away <---wasn't aware that i could transfer. I was rehired for krogers again last year in august (aug. 25 2013 to be exact) and been working as a home side clerk ( i work in kroger marketplace) till this day. I like my department however it's a bit far away from home . And because of certain circumstances i am depending on rides/taxi as current means of transportation to get to my job. There is a kroger that is actually "a comfortable walking distance" away from my house. And they have 3 different positions open that share slight synonymous activity.

Now for what i'm asking;

1. What is the first step or rather complete steps to transferring to one store to another store? (This is within state) and i'm in the southwest division (texas) if that helps

2. Should i contact the store managers at my store and the other store for my request for transfer?

3. Will i be able to keep the little seniority that i've built up even though im trying to transfer to a different department.

4. Also should i talk to the managers/leads of that department of my request to transfer?

Any help in this matter would be highly appreciated. I really actually enjoy my job at krogers and i don't want to quit to have to get the positions.

It depends on your contract.  In Mi, in order for me(a part time employee) to transfer to another store, I have to quit my store and apply at the other store.  I would lose my 6+ years senority and pay tier which isn't bad.  Anyone hired after 2010 is on a crappy payscale.

I have heard that managers can cause a transfer of a part time employee if there are special circumstances.  You wanting to transfer to a closer store might just be enough to get the transfer.

Ask your store manager if you are on good terms with them.  Explain the situation.  Also ask the store manager at the other store if it is possible without losing senority and pay.  They could give you experience pay but maybe not the senority.  You have almost been there a year.  You are so close to getting a weeks vacation if that is what your contract dictates.  Saving taxi fare and gas money might be worth losing the senority, plus less stress finding a ride.  Tough call.  Good luck with it.

Store managers have to approve transfers too. Some will block transfers if they don't want to lose certain employees. It's kind of like being punished for doing well.

Contact the store manager and the store manager of the store you want to transfer to first to see if there's an opening.  If there is and they want you, they may contact your store manager on their own.  Whether they do or not, you'll still need to fill out a transfer request form at your store.  As far as seniority goes, if the store you're transferring to is under the same contract, you'll keep your seniority.

I meant store manager and the department manager.

That's exactly what that is.  Two of us have been told no at my store.

1) Contact the store managers to ask if there is an opening and if they could help you set it up. Call the manager from the closer store first. Also ask to speak with the union rep at the closer store.

2) Yes.

3) It depends on what local the other store falls under. if it's the same than most likely keep the same pay... unless you're moving to meat or pharmacy, who can sometimes have different contacts from others in the same store.

4) Yes.

You shouldn't have to quit, lose seniority, or time accrued as long as the store you're looking to move  to is under the same local and contract.

I hope everything works out for you!
