should i quit?? bagger for a year and a half
Permalink

I have worked at kroger as a courtesy clerk (bagger) for about a year a half now and I'm still not a cashier yet. I don't know why I'm not one because i work as hard and as much as everyone else does and i always treat the customer with respect. I'm also one of the fastest baggers and i do lot more often than anyone else, because nobody else ever wants to. Despite this i still haven't had any checker training at all. I've asked about it for almost a year now, and evertime my manager says that they'll train me the next week or something but they never actually do. Everyone else whose been hired as a bagger gets training after working a few months and some people start as cashiers right away. We even have a lot of people whk are like 16 and can't scan beer or cigarettes so they constantly have to call supervisors and hold everything up but they get to check everyday and i have to sit there and bag for them when I'm old enough to scan anything and I've even worked therw longer. I'm so sick of being a bagger and being below everyone else and have to take their **** and being the one customers yell at when something goes wrong.

In my division you have to be 18 to check for this reason. Probably 40% of orders either have alcohol, drugs requiring ID, or tobacco, it'd be a nightmare for everyone.

Quit! If you're not being promoted as you think you should be, then you need to promote YOU! And a year should be enough time to determine that. At least transfer to another store and see what opportunities might be.

If you're not being promoted you might not be a good as you think, no offense.   Regardless, Id say that being a CC is okay job for high schoolers and after school its not something that one should do for very long.  Id try to get promoted to something else, produce, dairy, etc rather than just quit.  Pushing carts will hurt you with getting hired anywhere else other than fast food.  Most people will think you had no responsibilities and spent your day hiding out.  Good luck to you.

Or they're TOO good and that's why they won't be promoted. Think about it.

Right! That goes along the same line that the more you do the more they expect or no good deed goes unpunished.

All applies to my local directly, check yours first.
Baggers can't gain pay increases after the first year anyway. Get moved to another department, or find a new job.
Quite seriously almost any business was willing to offer more pay or other things, perhaps except Walmart.
Use your work experience to help you get new work.

Have you talked to your managers?

I ask all my courtesy clerks what they are going to do when they graduate high school. Most of them want to go to college and still work part time. I promote a lot of my courtesy clerks around that time, it's easiest because they are 18 and can work in other departments, grocery pull-up, meat, produce, deli, etc. This works out really well because of the tuition reimbursement program.

But if you don't talk to your managers it's much harder. A few of my courtesy clerks don't want the extra responsibility for whatever reason, but a few of them want to move up. It's hard to know which category you fall into if you don't communicate that. I like to promote my people. It's always a great feeling to promote from within.

Your Kroger has a tuition reimbursement program? When can I transfer there?! Lol. I know that Target and Starbucks help pay for college, but as far as my Kroger goes it's just a miniscule discount for online classes.

Yes, up to 3000 a year. But you have to fill out paperwork. It breaks down to be at most 1500 a semaster based on your grades, higher gpa gets the max of 1500.

I asked my managers about it. They said that the only way they'll pay for education is if you join M1D. I think I'd rather eat ramen noodles and suffer a thyroid attack than lose my soul.
