Hi all! I made a huge mistake today and it won't happen again but I was wondering your thoughts on the chance of me getting caught.

I just turned 18 and was told to run liqueur break. Three guys come in and have 4 bottles of alcohol. I ask for two of their ids. The one guy says he doesn't have it on him and he walks out of the store. The other two present theirs and they are well over the age to buy it. Against what I should of done I still sold it to them.

What are the chances that I'll be caught and loose my job or get kicked out of the service desk if found out?

What is the correct procedure?

Yes, you will get caught if it was a TABC sting.

No, You probably won't get caught unless you ask around at work about it and it gets back to the store manager.

Rookie mistake.  Learn from it and don't do it again.

It's against company policy to ask for multiple IDs unless state law says otherwise, so I wouldn't worry on that front.

If it was a sting it would depend on the state. Some, like mine, will fine you regardless. Others will only give you a warning/citation if you tried to check ID. Stings happen very fast though, so you would know already.

You're gonna be fine though. Every cashier at businesses that sell alcohol will have a sting scare at some point, but very few stings are actually carried out.

Why would you get in trouble for asking for ID? That's what you're supposed to do when a customer buys alcohol and cigarettes.

That is why I was asking the proper procedure.  I do not know what it is.

I think what the OP is concerned about is the 3rd guy might have been a minor.  4 bottles of booze for 2 adults or 4 bottles of booze for 2 adults and a minor?

If it was a sting the OP would have known that day. if you aren't in trouble right now you'll be fine.

They will call you in RIGHT after it happens if it is a sting...you are fine.

An employee is only required to have the ID of the person who pays. Even if he was with minors, it is not illegal. If you see the swap of money or hear talk amongst them about drinking you have to deny the transaction. Otherwise, there is nothing illegal. If a customer service person or manager questioned you about it or threatened you go straight to the union.

This post and a few of the others in this thread make things seem universal which are actually fairly variable depending on your division and state regulations. Don't assume that just because something is one way where you are, it will be the same everywhere else.

We have to id everyone in a group.   I always dread it because they love to argue with you.  I just grab the booze set it aside and say have a nice evening.

My favorite was the young pregnant girl and her husband.  He had his ID, she didn't.  She just kept saying "but I'm pregnant" over and over again.  Like that matters.

Maybe that was the point she was saying. Since she was pregnant she wasn't even going to be drinking it.

Maybe she would, maybe she wouldn't :P
