Self Checkout/U-Scan Question
Permalink

Does anyone here work SCO? When I got trained for SCO, I had to attend a class and we were told by the man that was training us, that we would each get override numbers so that we could override stuff without having to call over a supervisor/manager. Later on, after being at work for a few weeks now, I ask around about when I'm going to get my override numbers and what I was told was that SCO cashiers do not get override numbers "due to KMA guidelines." We're in the Atlanta division, so I don't know if that makes any difference.

So, two questions:

1. Does your store provide SCO attendants with override numbers?

2. What are 'KMA Guidelines?'

I have no idea what a KMA guideline is. And I was supposed to get a number, but it doesn't work yet so I just use a coworkers. What do you do if you need an override on a $10 or more item?

SCO and no override? That's ridiculous. The whole point of having someone at the podium is in case a customer has a problem, in which, 9/10, an override is needed.

My store shares an override number that only works at SCO.

Every cashier who runs sco on a regular basis has an override that works on sco only. KMA is another word for division, so they were talking about your division's policies.

There's only about five of us who actually know how to run SCO and none of us have an override number (I've asked) so I asked our front end department manager and she said we won't be getting an override number so I guess it's just a dumb division policy or something.

if you read through the SCO toolkit the only restriction is on those overnight.  the overnight person shouldn't have an override number and any overrides should be agreed upon with whoever is MOD.  is that what we do?  NO.  everybody who we trust to work overnight has a number.

it's up to the store manager and front end manager in practical terms.  all of our regular SCO staff have a number to use.

let me tell you it can be a pain to have to override things when there aren't enough people with keys or codes on the floor.  customers are forced to wait.  sometimes lots of customers.

I get it, override abuse is a window to loss but then again you shouldn't stick just anybody over at SCO.  Nothing drives me crazier than attendants who wander far off or think they have to be talking to cashiers or at the desk people with no real reason.  having a good person, efficient person at SCO is critical

We used numbers for overrides for the longest time, so when I was on SCO (40 hours a week for 4 months, then down to 32 hours a week for another 3), I used someone else's number since they never gave me one.

Then we switched to a barcode and the numbers didn't work any more and they didn't give me one even though I was on u-scan all the time. It was a royal pain and I'd be a jerk about it sometimes and page the supervisor "I need an override at u-scan". It held everything up, biggest pain ever.

then they moved me to customer service (32 hours a week and after school, 40 hours) and still didn't give me a card. you can't even do coupons up there without an override!

I finally got one, but those were dark days.

For us, numbers still works, but this is how it is:

SCO/low-level guest care: number-generated barcode

Assistant Supervisor: number (keyed or barcode)

Supervisor: letter-generated barcode (a name or a series of letters)

Yes, our registers can accept letters and you can even type with them, but to be able to use the letter keys you need a key, so the barcode is much easier.
