I'm 2nd in line been here for four years (not including dept deli manager)
Been asking for Sundays off for the past couple weeks but keep getting denied because "Understaffed" we have several employees and 3 new hires as well, However the person 2 spots below me basically gets any day they need off just handed to them, including sundays.. what gives? I confront the manager and he gives so defensive "well I dont have anyone else trained" well train somebody I can't have a life and you are to lazy to rain ONE of the TWELVE people in your department? What happens when I call in sick, does it fall apart?

They each pick a corner and curl into an ash ball - then cry.

In my contract we are not required to work Sundays. It also states they are supposed to rotate Sundays off. They took away the .50 premium a few years ago. I've had maybe two Sundays off in 3 years. I love working early Sunday morning.

I hope you're not a member of the union. That local sounds spineless. No way I'd want to work the Sunday rush without a premium.

I'm union. It doesn't get busy until church lets out and the rush starts around 11:30. I get off at 2:00 so being busy helps the last 1 1/2 hours fly by.

I've worked for Kroger for over 25 years and I've never gotten a Sunday premium. We get an extra 50 cents an hour for hours worked between 10:00 AM and 6:00 AM.

Vacations are scheduled by seniority but days requested off no pay are not done by seniority. Availability requests don't have to be approved, and if you're full time or part time working over 32 hours a week you technically have to be available all the time in order to get your benefits. That's how it is in UFCW 227 anyway.
