Produce closers suck at my store
Permalink

Our produce manager has been off for a week on vacation, the whole dang week when I go in at 4am to cut fruit I have to clean up the work station, hunt down the carts which have been buried in boxes in the back of our cooler, move boxes away from the wall so the grocery guys won't be jerks with our pallets (those guys have blocked our entire produce area before because of stuff on the wall) it can take me anywhere from 15 to 30 mins to start doing my job because the closer doesn't do his. I would just do mine and ignore his mess but I literally can't because his mess blocks my stuff, the other cut fruit girl said that by the time he started doing this it was past his 45 days at kroger so our manager has to give this kid warnings and corrective action before he could fire him. This kid doesn't stock the shelves before he leaves, he doesn't clean the sales floor, he doesn't pull molding product, nobody even knows what he does. Last night he left out strawberries on my workstation overnight, they should've been in the cooler, I went to the cooler and it was backed up to the door with deli meats and cheese, I'm assuming the cooler went out up there but he allowed them to fill the cooler so nobody could walk in it, I had to move all the stuff to another cooler before I could even get in there to get my fruit. Everybody complains about this mess but the kid has to get so many warnings before being fired, all I can say is that I'm thankful school is starting back soon so maybe he'll quit but dang this is beyond annoying and I just had to rant a bit. Also my manager returns from vacation tomorrow and I have picture proof of his mess biggrin

Haha, we don't even have a "closer".

One of our produce clerks for the night quit on Wednesday, even pulled a no-call no-show as his way of quitting. It's a sad, sad state of affairs here. I worked the last hour of my shift in Nutrition while one of the co-managers conditioned. That said, the last official produce person we had during this week leaves at 3 PM. I'm sure they've adjusted the schedule accordingly for this week, but still was quite a terrible time for our produce department.

Actually, it's just about sad in general. We've got pharmacy techs hauling pallets now. Even caught me off guard with that, too.

The person that asked about my store number made me realize I don't even know it, I don't think they ever even told me and I didn't care enough to ask lol that's sad.

Pharmacy techs hauling pallets, that's bad I hope to god ours never gets that bad, let's hope both our stores get replacements soon, maybe even get somebody that does their job, doubt it. Our closer never closes with a produce manager, ever, the managers that close are for other departments and obviously don't care enough to make sure our department is cared for. Makes the rest of us look bad, our nutrition lady is off all this week so I get to be the only one cutting fruit and cleaning up in the mornings, going to be a fun week but at least my manager is back in town!

I've heard talk of having produce managers come in later, but its never happened.  Occasionally they'll have our manager work a mid shift but he always complains about it.

Most of the time people will do a crappy job if managers will let them.

In my store all dept. heads have to work one night a week. I actually see the produce manager there probably 2 nights a week. That must be an exception then?

I've heard it blamed on the ordering schedule, but Im not sure of the specifics.  It would suck going in early a few days and working late a few days.  Seems like the closing managers are too busy to keep up on them and they just slack now.  I wish i could get back closing, im tired of beating myself up splitting freight and having to rotate like crazy cause my manager is over ordering.  We have twenty plus cases of Honeydew melons right now.

Yes, we have new kids that are the produce closers right now.  They leave a disaster from their cooler to their prep room to outside of their prep room.  We need to get thru the space outside of their prep room and it is usually blocked with spoiled product, garbage and bananas.  Last night they left a leaning tower of black trays on a flat rolling aluminum cart.  I usually work around their mess to get my job done.  If that doesn't work, I roll their mess into the prep room for them to deal with in the AM.

Same with the back room.  Many times I have come in and the courtesy clerks and evening crews have left bales, bottle bins and pallet stacks scatterred all over the back dock.  We have a huge back dock and they still manage to clog it up!  I have to find a regular pallet jack so I can unbury the power equipment.  I must admit the store managers have been making sure the backroom is clean lately.  I know it won't last long if they stop monitoring the backroom.

As for Department managers working late.  My understanding is that per Eschedule, they all must work atleast one closing shift a week.  I am sure many are breaking the rules(editing eschedule) so they don't have to work the late shift.
