Doing more work for the same amount of pay
Permalink

I recently got moved departments to where I basicly keep the store clean throw out trash and all of that funny stuff.  Oh but don't worry! You won't have to push carts! Nope! Sorry! I do my job plus push carts and bag and check, while getting paid the same amount as baggers.. Who only bag and push carts. Oh how I love cleaning diahrea off the floors and getting paid the same as someone who stands in one spot all day :) I already go to school full time and I don't need this

Speak with your union Rep.  Depends on your contract.

In our contract:

Baggers are not allowed to be a cashier.

Utility Clerk keeps the store clean and is not allowed to be a cashier.  The utility clerk is a glorified bagger.  They top out a $1 more but do all the tasks the baggers do when requested.

I didn't sign that stupid contract. That's almost 40 bucks a month! And the thing is. The more you get paid the more money the greedy union gets out of you

Yah, but see where you are now.  You are a doormat.  My pay has increased exponentially while my union dues have stayed the same.

If you are a Courtesy clerk or Utility clerk, you should not be running the register.  If you are a Cashier, you should top out in pay near or over $10.  But, you have to put in your time to get the pay increases.

In some states you have the same rights as the union people but don't have to join to enjoy those rights.  Find out what your state is.

Yes you have to put in the time to get more money, but a 5 cent raise every once and a while doesn't do anything... Also, I would like to say I am in the same boat. I break my back for my store but get paid almost nothing... I also think cashiers should get paid more by higher elm scores because that would give so much more incentive to go faster and be a better cahier overall with customer experience.

Here, courtesy clerks can use the register ('work at a higher level') if they are trained and willing. There was an incentive for this because the hours worked on the register got paid extra - it amounted to 60-90 cents more. However, minimum wage went up recently, which is great for baggers - combo clerks on the other hand, did not see a pay increase. So they get all the responsibilities (and liabilities) of cashiering, plus bagging, but get paid the exact same as the guys pushing carts.

Sucks, but I guess that's how the latest contract worked out.

On the other hand, combos usually aren't sent on all the crap details, so there's that.

Still, I can't imagine not being in the union. All the negatives of the job with zero protections whatsoever. Sounds like you have zero options, OP.

I am very anti union. Paying those dummies $12.00 a week for what? A strike? Almost a lock out? No thanks.

I got promoted to a management position and transferred to a non union store. I've worked there for 5 years and have never be randomly disciplined or threatened with termination.

Assuming you are not a lazy worker, or a trouble one, you have no reason to worry about losing your job. I've found that the union is only good for keeping the lazy, unwilling people.
