I checked more into the position tonight by talking to deli clerks as they were washing the floor. This would be the Front End version of utility clerk. Dishwasher, taking out the trash, scrubbing the floor at night or as needed, keeping the tables and food areas cleaned, sweeps as needed, etc.
For the exact pay I make now. Except...no goddamned shopping carts.

And probably more autonomy in your work, which is ALWAYS a plus. I'd expect a lot of later shifts for this position and probably some closing responsibilities like you've mentioned. If you have even a decent deli manager and a good work ethic, then this position will be great for you. You get clerk pay too I believe, which means you top out around $10 instead of $7.50 (DOC).

From what I have learned it will be mostly for the evenings BUT they are going to push it for daytime due to school starting back up and some of the deli staff taking classes either at the tech school or even the high schoolers over 16. There are two managers involved here, I've spoken with one who said she needs open availability. Which I already have. I live three miles away and even in a storm can make it there within the hour. The other manager is the one who would actually make a hiring decision or at least take my internal interest and 'keep me in mind.' Sounds like yes there will be closer opportunities but will probably start out day both to 'test' the new hire and get a feel for the department and then slowly (or quickly, whichever) move into night. So if the store gets really busy, whomever takes this position would be in the back cleaning for the deli staff, then taking out their trash as needed, sweeping around the place as requested, etc. There may end up being additional responsibilities hedging into actual deli clerk work, but this position is more of a lackey or utility clerk position. Screw it. Even if I don't end up getting it (should I try...) I can always keep my ears open. If it means no more parking lot duty, that's what I want.

If you really want off the front end, ask if there are any openings on 3rd shift. They have the same high turnover rate as the front end. You might be able to work from 10 pm to 2 am, which really isn't that bad if you can afford to wake up later.
