Hi all- I have been out of the work force for about 20 years raising my kids. I am thinking of going to work at Kroger for some extra spending money. I can only work days - preferrably early mornings beginning at 7:15ish after my son leaves for school. I cannot work nights or weekends because he plays at a high level of soccer and has 3 practices at night and games/tournaments on the weekends. I am thinking of part time mostly, but could work more. I do not want to run a cash register or work in the deli or bakery or meat dept. I really would like to basically stock shelves. I see people doing that every morning when I am shopping at my Kroger. Just wondering what your thoughts are for me? I was also wondering what someone makes starting out for the different positions. I am in the Cincinnati area. Thanks for any advice.
I don't think Kroger will fit your schedule. They need people who can work nights, weekends, and holidays. The only thing that they'll adjust your schedule for is if you go to school. Beyond that, you may have a harder time. I started working days, but then I started getting scheduled for nights and have been working nights since. And even if they did allow you to only work during the day, they may call you in to cover a night or weekend shift. As Anonymouse1 said, the starting pay is minimum wage so you won't be making much, even with 40 hours a week.
I, too, agree. Morning shifts are for people with 40+ years with the company. If you start with grocery they will have you working replenishment in the evenings... you can try, though... what could you lose?

And BagBoy, that is hilarious!!! Yeah, or I could rely on that same soccer son for academics - because next year, he is taking his 3rd level of high school math! He's already had the 9th gr math and tenth 10th gr math when he was in 6th and 7th gr - he's way ahead, and wants to become a big time engineer of some sort - so yeah, I'll hope for him to get me some extra moola, eh? LOL
So everyone starts out around minimum in the Cincy area? And am I correct in seeing that the cashiers or even front end as you all call them, that they make less than the other departments?
What does anyone know about working at say Meijer or Walmart?
I just would like to find a morning/day job for Mon-Fri - and something kind of behind the scenes - like sorting or stocking or filing - something like that somewhere - so any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! THANKS!
If you've seen people stocking shelves in the morning, it's probably the people from the Drug/GM (General Merchandise) department. Usually people have to put in several years with Kroger before they can transfer to that department because it's all early morning hours and you get out and still have most of your day left to do whatever you want. You may want to give deli and bakery a second look. There are lots of behind the scenes things that go in those departments early in the morning. Of course each store has their own schedule in the way they like to do things. At my store we have someone come in at 6:00 AM to bag and tag bread. Anybody can do that. The deli has people come in to do things like fry chicken or set up the display case.

You know, I'm still a newbie to the big picture of things, considering it's only been six months. But bob damn, sometimes I find it difficult to believe people have worked for Kroger for 40 years. Then I remember going to the Kroger with my mother grocery shopping and being a member of their 'Cookie Club.' A sugar or peanut butter cookie every time we came to the store. I must have been no older than eight at the time. I remember all paper bags, and how myself and my younger sisters would paint them for fun at home. I remember easy check-outs, no long lines and while I didn't pay much attention, I'm pretty sure people enjoyed their jobs.
I guess I got unlucky enough to miss all of that and fall underneath the almighty dollar and corporate b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t that we have today.
I worked grocery during day-ish hours, but that's only because it's one of the larger stores and we have a KMP truck that showed up early in the morning. That was a pretty tough one to pull off. Getting a job that's "banking hours" is next to impossible unless you want fewer and shorter shifts. Actual shelf stocking is an evenings/nights job for most departments.
Honestly, your don't wants outnumber your wants, that is if you're looking into working for Kroger. Not being able to work evenings and ESPECIALLY weekends won't give you many hours, if they even hired you at all. The e-schedule system is psychotic for part-timers. You probably wouldn't like it for what you're trying to do.
Damn, I love reading the funnies before my night shift. Was to be Drug/GM, now in apparel. Lee tad manager is very cool, so far. Although I was hired for "nights, weekends, and holidays, I am schedule for both days and long afternoon. 8-2 days? 1:00 to 10:00 afternoons. I do not do this for spending money, I do this to feed my kid. So...I will be the biggest kiss butt employee you will ever find. Call me at 4 a.m.? Heck, I will be there in less than 20 minutes. HA, so much for my degree!

A degree is necessary for making decent money without a lot of heavy labor.
She's right! IDKnow what kroger is paying in your state but here in the Atlanta they are starting off with 7.30 an hour. Plus at my store, my manager been assigning me to 3 nites a week totaling 12 hours a week as a over-nite Drug GM clerk....BUT I have a young male team member( not a manager) who been receiving 40 hours a week for months. Word to the wise, cross Kroger off your list!!!
