Overtime!

So, I was scheduled for 39.5 hours this week. I was supposed to work 5-10:30 yesterday, but they changed it to 3-11:30 (Without telling me). Them adding that extra 8 hours put me at 42 hours this week. I just hope that they pay me for those two extra hours that I work. My store usually doesn't give out overtime unless they're in desperate need. When overtime is being offered, they'll post it next to the time clock. There isn't a sign even posted there stating that overtime is being offered. However, I'm not complaining though. Overtime is overtime. I'll take it. Unless they bring it up to me, I'm not saying anything. For only making minimum wage, I'll take all the overtime that I can get. Bring on the overtime! However, if they don't pay me, I'll be extremely pissed. I'm not working overtime for free.

They have to pay you. If you were on the clock, you'll get the OT. If they don't like it, they should have paid attention to the schedule better.

It is illegal not to pay for hours worked.

Yesterday started the work week, though, so if they have a problem with the extra hours, they might 'take it back', sending you home early on a slower day.

But, assuming OP's contract is worded like many others, they can't technically force OP to go home early.

Interesting. My contract doesn't have that clause at all. They send some people home early to cut OT all the time.

Over here, I don't think we're allowed to send people home because of OT.

If the OT was unauthorized on the employee's part, s/he'll be written up.

But if it's like the OP's case, then management here would be forced to suck it up, pay more attention to the schedule, and hope that no one higher up will bear down on them.

Don't worry about it.

Whoever changed the schedule or asked you to stay is responsible for the OT.  It will be their neck on the line.  Not yours.  If they ask you about it, tell them nicely who changed the schedule.  Do not get caught up into an arguement about it.  If they try to write you up, do not sign it and definitely grieve it.

I am not under any illusion.  I am a regular peon like you.  I do not make executive decisions.

I like my store managers.  They know I will work 14 hours a day if that is what it takes to keep Grocery department on track.  If they ask me to stay, I always let them know it is OT.  I even gave 8 hours back one time because they were already in hot water that week from the district coordinator.  I was called in on my day off because 2 people called in that night.  I took an extra day off later in the week on a light night.
