Bagger promoted to Cashier
Permalink

At our store, a bagger with a not so stellar work history (a few write ups), and the fact that he's only been employed for 90 days just got promoted to cashier over a black guy who has been there 15 months.  I have a HUGE problem with this....the white guy that got promoted constantly sucks up to the floor manager, and the other kid WORKS, and works HARD.  Any recourse for this guy?

Why doesn't the other guy suck up too? Why does race matter?

If you dont suck up to management you get screwed over. Especially by the front end manager. The only ones who get good schedules from them is the suck ups

For more hours, I would suck anyone, man, women, bi-anyone.

Race means nothing in Kroger. It's about who you suck up to, how well you do it, and what kind of favors you'll get in return.

Ideally, yeah, race doesn't matter.

But race matters to some people, and if you're trying to suck up to someone who harbors biases against you because of something like that, it's difficult - and even more difficult to prove.

there would be other reasons like availability, capacity, age at play here.  did the hard worker want to be a cashier?  i've had some who said no thanks.  I've had baggers turned cashiers who regretted it.

In this case, the hard worker DID want to be promoted....he wasn't asked. They promoted the other guy because he's a suck-up. Now the courtesy clerks who have seniority over this kid are raising 10 levels of hell because they weren't asked either....

I don't think courtesy clerks have any seniority until they become clerks. It's not like it's a remotely skilled job that someone from the streets couldn't do.

I know CC's don't have seniority over clerks but don't they have seniority over each other?

My understanding is that they accrue no seniority at all. That's the way it was in my contract up until this last round.

I don't know if we do or not, but that wouldn't surprise me.
We don't get raises.
We do the dirty work (gobacks, carts, etc.)
We have to answer to everyone.
We may have one of the jobs in the store that requires the least amount of labor overall, but we also have one of the lowest jobs in the store.
It would not surprise me if we had no seniority.
