Future of Kroger

Today, I was speaking with my shop steward. He informed me that in our new contract (Cincinnati/Dayton division), status 4 employees will be limited to 27 hours and under from now on due to the healthcare law. I'm completely shocked! He went on to tell me that NO ONE will be making their status 1&3 unless they are an Assistant/Dept. Head from now on. I was really excited about the contract changes and voted yes, but I feel really bad for the part time people now. How are people supposed to raise their families on those hours? On top of all this, I heard in the news that Kroger is hiring 20,000 people across the nation; 1,200 of them in the Dayton area. I guess Kroger is trying to run their stores with ONLY part time people. How are we supposed to provide that "Customer First Service" when our hours are being slashed and benefits cut? Kroger needs to understand that in order to be the best, they need to treat us better. It goes along with the saying, "You get what you pay for." Sorry, I really needed to rant.

If they really are going to hire part timers and stick to it this is going to blow up in their face.

I work odd part time hours and am sad I can't buy even Kroger food for my child. I feel bad seeing other full-timers buying groceries, and I get $23 a week food benefits. Lunch? An apple if I remember to bring it. While the higher ups have lunch at Star Bucks daily. Yep, glad I'm taking that second job...kid needs to eat and if we lose apartment, we lose everything. Union? HA. Give me back my $10.50 a week so I can buy more apples.

I suggest you invest in that "second job" more and leave Kroger the moment an opportunity arises. :P

Or, look for more employee-friendly stores out there.

You just now got the memo?  I knew this a year ago before Obamacare passed.

I am part time but they can't hire anyone to stay on the night grocery department.  They quit faster than they can be replaced.  They keep hiring slackers that don't like to work too hard for minimum wage forever.

Our contract in Mi states that they must place bids for so many full time positions a year.  So, all is not lost.  I have been hearing about hours being cut and losing insurance for the last year.  There is no sign that it is going to happen in the next two years at my store.

Anyone on the 1st contract tier is about to retire.

Anyone on the 2nd contract tier is already full time.

Most people on the 3rd contract tier are full time.  The top pay is about 50 cents less than the 2nd tier.  Their insurance will be paused if they average less than 20 hours a quarter.

Anyone hired on the 4th contract tier can have their insurance paused if they average less than 26 hours a quarter.  The pay stops at $11 an hour until they are hired full time.

So yes, the master plan will be a cluster f--k when it comes to fruition.  The guy who thought it up will probably get promoted to something better paying.  I foresee all stores will have slacker full timers in charge of low paid part timers that have no clue what it means to work.  Kroger will have to hire twice as many part timers to meet the demands of the DDP.  Kroger will spare no expense on all these part timers in order to save a buck on insurance.  Customers will go shop at the dreaded walmart.  Kroger will go belly up unless someone in management changes the course of this trainwreck.  The end.

The best thing to do is keep looking for other work.  I think when we see that the OSAT numbers no where near what they want, the older managers are gonna get pushed out.  I think we'll see more younger regional managers who are gonna push hard to run off older employees and people who are working on the older contracts.

I agree.  I think that is part of the master plan also.  I think programs have been added to our duties to give store managers a cause to fire people easier..  Even tho it is believed by most that you can't be fired for lack of productivity under the contracts, I believe it is coming.  Look how the contracts are going down hill each round.

I like what I do.  The pay is ok enough for me.  Plus, I live cheap and have a few legal side incomes.

In a perfect world where everything is square and perfect and the same, these programs would work.  Not everyone has the same positive attitude or work habits.  Kroger needs people with strong leadership skills from top to bottom to make the company a complete success.

So what is a status 4 employee? I am a pt bagger in Arkansas so I am unfamiliar with this. I have noticed my hours were
cut back to around 25, but I wasn't too worried but maybe I should be?

Yep and let the tax payers pay for the status 4 workers insurance.  Why do you think Kroger stock is over 50 a share now?

When you start to see long time employees with strong work ethics and integrity, who actually give a crap about their jobs get forced out.....you know something ain't right. It is too bad this business doesn't care about their employees. Every business needs part timers but most importantly they need to retain full timers who are hard working, experienced in their fields and who contribute to their depts. If they continue hiring lower management in stores who have no moral principles, they will continue to lose business as well as good workers. All that adds up to big dollars, right out the door to their competitors. Elimination needs to start at the middle management levels in the company, these idiots could never do the jobs that their employees do everyday, never!

I explained what status 4/3/1 is in the other thread but it might be a term only used in Cincy/Dayton. I'm not really sure.

But yea, this has been happening for a while now.

I've been stuck getting like 25-27 hours a week and I'm SUPPOSED to be one of the senior part timers.
The only thing seniority is getting me now is day shift hours vs. evening shift because i'm really not getting too many more hours than the people under me.

There's like 0% chance of me getting full time ever at this rate. Unless I ever go into bakery manager training. And honestly I don't see that happening any time soon. :(

I agree with everything you have said. I am one of the old timers and I am trying to make it to 2015 wen I can sign my retirement papers. I am scared that my idiot manager will try to trump up charges against me. and the union will not help you anymore.

I agree. I am a full timer and old timer and I had my manager tell me right to my face that I would not have a job if my elms did not go up. I have worked hard for Kroger but now I am being told that I have never worked hard for Kroger. 2015 will be my last year working. I am retiring before I am forced out. the union will not fight for you. te union is for Kroger.
