I'm currently trying to work my way through school. I've got my availability set for three days per week, (Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday) as it's impossible for me to work any more than that. However, my manager has been scheduling me to work on Saturdays when it's very hard for me to be available. I have no problem filling in for another employee if they need the time off, but I feel that my grades may suffer if I to keep working Saturdays. How do I go about telling my manager that I can't work those days without coming off in a negative light?

Tell the manager,"It's been nice knowing you but I quit."

Sorry, but weekends off in retail is no such thing.

Just be frank and let your manager know your grades will suffer if you have to work Saturdays.  They will work with you or they won't.  Most managers are short handed on the weekends and have people work because "of the needs of the business".

"i absolutely need to have my weekend free so i can go ou... study. yeah, study."

just be honest. kroger isn't worth your education.

reset it again in eschedule (greatpeople.me), talk to your dept head, talk to the schedule writer. it took me forever to get correct availability as well. be firm but flexible within reason. do not make excuses.

If you're young, you can try having tears in your eyes when you talk about your school and the hopes for the future you have. Sniffle a little bit. Might work!

I'm not trying to make excuses. All of my homework is due by 11:59 on Saturday night.

Sometimes that's just how it works out. I'm going to university right now and sometimes have to work when I've got class. That's always fun...

Only thing you can really do is just keep resetting it back to unavailable and hope they get the hint.

They did that to me for over a year until I finally got fed up with it.  I had to get the schedule switch days with others, claim hours etc. and track down the get the manager to approve it.  My union rep told me if it continued we would file a grievance.  He also told me I did not have to go to work on the days I was unavailable if scheduled and there was nothing Kroger could do about it.

I told the store manager I had talked to my union rep and was going to fax a letter to our DM about it and he got it all worked out in one day!

That is just so much frustration. I'd have ended up cracking a few heads in the process haha.
