Help and tips for cash register?

I was recently hired at a Fred Meyers and went through orientation and cashier training. Needless to say, the training didn't really get through my brain clearly.

This is basically what I know how to do:

  • Sign in/off the register
  • Payments with cash, credit cards, how to process checks and WIC checks
  • Scan coupons
  • Void items
  • How to remove security tags
  • How to type in the numbers when scanning them does not work

and that's about it? I really need to know how to do other important things. I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me some other things I need to know and include what keys to press to make it happen. Thank you!

Don't be shy about using the intercom. Call a manager if you know their extension and ask when you don't know how to do something. Really, you'll be doing that anyway no matter what anyone tells you here, unless you're reading this forum while on the register.

learn produce codes.

scan items, collect money, then bag the order.

close your till as soon as you can.

when in doubt press clear+total.

nosale+enter opens the till.

suspend+total+override+<scan the supervisors key> = suspend an order

(before order)nosale+20+signon+1+enter = check food stamp card balance.

Ask if the customer has anything on the bottom of the cart, if they need anything from the service desk, and if they have a kroger card and/or coupons/rain check BEFORE the order begins. Scan the card only when you're ready to begin the order.

nosale+signon = lock your register (requires your password to unlock)

(during order) 16+signon = print an in progress ticket this is good for counting mega event totals.

' [+] ' are mega event participating items.

10 for 10 items do not have to be bought in stacks of 10 to get the price. they are always 1 dollar.

buy 1 get 1 rings up as half price for each item.

meat is always weighted by pound. you wouldn't believe how many customers see "5.99" on chicken and think it's per pack when it's 5.99 per pound.

with thanksgiving coming up soon: the customer needs to buy $25 or more to get the discount on the turkey. it only applies once per order.

When checking a coupon always check the dates.

When checking a coupon if it says "Free X" They can not get Honey nut X. It applies to Original only.

Coupons can be super specific.

Sometimes soda has limits depending on the sale. check weekly to make sure how you need to process orders.

1111049213 is kroger 24 water.

1111080332 is kroger 32 water. always ask what kind of water the customer has

1200000017 is 24 pepsi

1200000053 is 24 diet pepsi

1200000088 is 24 mt dew

7800008210 is 24 dr pepper

7800008310 is 24 diet dr pepper

Always ask how many soda the customer has if you see a 6/12/24 pack.

always keep a pen handy in your pocket you'll need it. trust me.

when selling beer and smokes if you doubt their age AT ALL. ID them.

If you hear anything about someone being underage. ID them.

always check the date carefully on IDs make sure it's not a fake to the best of your abilities.

for a rain check you do <price of item on the rain check>+price override+<scan the item>+2 (rain) for every item the customer has that applies to the rain check.

If the customer gets angry with you  ask them if they would like to speak with a supervisor or manager do not deal with angry people. pawn them off on someone else. The people paid to deal with them.

and importantly....... do NOT be afraid to ask for help if you don't understand something. If you are unsure about how to proceed stop everything and ask for help. It's no shame in doing it make sure things are correct.

and finally.....do not sign ANYTHING but your paycheck refuse to even hold the pen and admit nothing.

Welcome to Kroger. Good Luck.

I've had people make a notebook of things to remember. TBH it impressed me but I felt sad because it is a lot to learn and many things can go wrong.

This, ten times over. There are very few mistakes that will actually get you fired/suspended, but almost anything having to do with controlled substances and minors is a _huge_ deal. Think of how happy your managers will be after getting a $1,000 fine...

Also, pens are super useful.

Don't.

Refer them to the service desk.
