I am kind of curious why the lead got fired. Don't explain if you don't feel compfortable.
Here, there are two positions. A night lead($1 more) and a Night Grocery Manager($4 more). They both serve the same purpose. I don't think the lead orders but does everything else. Make sure work is getting done correctly and efficiently, recieves trucks, check fast alert, and keeps eye on store overnight, etc.
If you are familiar with all the tasks that need to be done overnight and you are compfortable leading a crew into getting it done, then I would go for it. I would check with your union rep to make sure you can step down if it is overwhelming for you.
I like the pressure but usually a week is enough for me. After that, I am ready to be a regular clerk again.

Ouch! I asked because I am always seeing bids for night grocery manager. I am always wondering where the previous manager went. And, do I really want to sign it.
As for backstock, it explodes here. First, we are shorthanded on nights. Second, the 4 person daycrew are new, slow(unfamiliar with store practices and need better training) and used as baggers during surges. I have found 2 cases a day lastweek(10 cases total) stocked into the wrong place on shelf. I am 90% sure it was someone on days. Sometimes backstock is too much distro, sometimes it is over ordering, most of the time it is because people on days are zeroing everything out and not finding it on backstock or in shippers during the replenishment report. Whoever does the replenishment report will Zero items out. We undo the changes on nights. It is constant and daily routine.
Having the guys on days run backstock is a nightmare. Omg, they condense everything into as few boxes as possible and scatter same items in the process. I was ticked because they cut in 5 cases of something that has been on backstock for over 2 months. I had the privilege of taking all five cases off the shelf so the 2 different cases of the right products that just came in would fit on the shelf. I was not a happy camper. They are cutting in slow movers all over the store. They are literally hiding product in every aisle. It is impossible to correct BOHs when they hide wrong products in the way back of the dark shelf. I am still finding items from 3 months ago when they ran backstock on days just before inventory. I knew there was no way that stuff sold.
I am not going to argue with anyone about it. Right now, I think our grocery department is a complete disorganized mess. Even if I did make suggestions, no one is going to follow thru with them. It will last a few days and then back to the same messy routine. We have 11 people between days(5) and nights(6) and still can't make oos. I want out of this store so bad just so I can be part of an organized crew.

One of my friends does it and has a ton of stress. Day crew can't even keep ad filled, and his guys are constantly screwing off. Or calling in or going home sick. He had to start going in on backstock nights, because Uboats were overflowing. If there's a good raise that comes with it, go for it, but not for a buck an hour.

Jesus Christ how horrifying! Same **** happens here except it's the reset dude cutting in the same detergent into 4 different places on the same aisle, ugh!

Without condensing, backstock explodes, which was the original problem.
It really works best if people save the totes from KMP, load them up with as many like items as possible, and try to get rid of as many cardboard boxes as they can. That way it's condensed AND comes and goes from the backroom stable.

There is a way to condense that makes sense. The way our daycrew is condensing is creating way too much extra work.
For instance, they will empty one cereal box. They will go to the next cereal box and put everything in the empty box. So on and so on. Basically, they just played musical boxes. So, If I am looking for Kellogs frosted flakes. I find the box. But, no, it is Kroger shredded wheat. The kellogs frosted flakes is in the kroger toasted oats box. And the Kroger toasted oats are in the are in the General Mills cherrios box. Next, I find 1 box of Kroger Grape nuts in all 12 misc cereal boxes. Dang, Kroger grape nuts is oos. I need all 12 in one case 10 minutes ago. Did I mention I am trying to do the backstock review!! They just turned a 1.5 hour job into 2.5 hour headache. It would be a bad idea to put all the canned veggies mixed together in a blue totes. In the baking aisle, they took one empty marshmellow box and dumped all the betty Crocker and pillsbury icing in there together.
Our facings are getting too narrow and it has been getting busier and busier at our store lately. We really need to run backstock every day.
