So does this mean I'm fired?

We had a lady (in my line of course) walk out with her buggy full of items without paying.

Long story short my printer ran out of receipt paper and it did that annoying thing where it refuses to let you back out or move on until you replace it, and I told the lady to just wait to finish her transaction until I could replace it.

Which took about three minutes since I had to bend down and dig for a new roll because I didn't have the receipt paper in my drawer (just a hell of a lot of catalina paper), and had to find the box in the mess of the beneath my register. Only when I popped back up from grabbing it and putting it in the machine I turn around and see no customer.

At this point I thought that maybe she had ran and grabbed something else. I asked the next customer in line who said she left with her buggy. At which point I grab the nearest supervisor to tell her what happened, and ask to go find her in the parking lot since I was pretty sure she only left because she somehow thought it was finished and okay to leave. Which was denied since I needed to stay at my register with people in line, and instead of doing anything herself the supervisor just suspended the transaction and went on her merry way not even listening to what had happened.

I'm not sure I'm going to get fired, but then what do I know.

How in the world could she think it was ok to leave when she obviously knew that her order wasn't completed and she hadn't even paid yet?

That's....odd.

Why would she think that it was ok to leave with an unfinished and unpaid order? Does she not realize that it's considered stealing?

Plenty of people will pull a fast one when given the opportunity.  If your manager suspended the transaction and walked off I wouldn't sweat it.

I accidentally let a case of beer walk out the door during my probation period and didn't get in trouble because I let my super know and the csm know about it the moment I realized. If this is first time happening, you should be okay ymmv though

You're absolutely not going to get fired. The customer left before the transaction was finalized, and wound up basically stealing stuff. You did your part fine, you told her to wait while you changed the receipt tape, but she ignored you. So you told your supervisor, who suspended the transaction. All that stuff will be shrink, but there's really nothing else anyone could have done here. Don't worry about it!

Surely the next person in line or the bagger would have noticed the lady leaving without paying.  Why didn't they say anything?

You won't get fired.  You did all you could.  From now on before you sign on your register make sure you have receipt tape, kroger cards, pen etc.  You can't rely on anyone to have those items stocked so just make it a habit.

It's a good thing they didn't let you go after her.  If she was going to steal there's no telling what she would have done if confronted.

Per usual behavior at Kroger, it sounds like the supervisor was at fault, not you.
You should be fine.

usually what happens in my store when this happens, we'll put the order on hold and "forget about it" then void it out later if the customer doesn't come back to pay.  that way the cashier doesn't get into trouble.

There should be a button on the credit card screen that says "I won't be back." Many people who 'forget' about their wallet are indirectly begging.
