Can't seem to get hired
Permalink

Alright, so I applied on 10/18 to be an overnight stocker and haven't recieved any calls or emails yet. I've gone in the store and talked to the customer service dude, whom gave me the number to the hiring manager. So I call her afterwards and she says "Oh sorry I can't look into your application or anything, I can't do that." Okay that's fine I guess, I don't know how her job works.

Anyway I'm pretty desperate for a job since my 2 weeks at Home Depot ends really soon. I'm actually really interested in being a night stocker, and for some odd reason I kind of want to bust my ass instead of standing behind a checkstand all day. I have full availability, not quite dumb as a rock, 17 going on 18 on Thanksbirthdaygiving soon.

So, is there any way I can improve my chances of being hired? I've thought about just going in the store and talking to the manager but I'm not too sure if that'll help anything. Could being a girl have anything to do with me not being contacted for the job? hmm Could any of you guys give me some hints on what I should do? Bother the manager, just wait, look for a new job, give up and become a hermit? How did you guys get hired? Thanks

You probably haven't gotten a reply because you're still 17. Pretty sure you have already be 18 to be on overnight crew, what with working with the equipment and all. Maybe you could see if they need a daytime grocery clerk, then after a month ask the grocery manager if there are any openings for night crew. They'll probably have you just condition (face the shelves) for the first month.

maaaaaaaaaan that sucks since I'll be 18 so soon, is there any chance a manager would still hire me since it's so close? I assume no, since it's just a matter of law/safety since all the equipment... cry

for anything other than front end, you probably can't get hired since you're 17 because of safety policies.

What state are you in?

My store would hire you in a heartbeat as a night stocker.  They might have you do light work until you are 18 but they would be eager to hire you.

I'm in Texas(Angleton to be exact) and their store is pretty huge, so I'm somewhat surprised I haven't gotten a call back(other than for not being 18 yet) then again I don't see the issue with keeping me away from the bailer and other equipment for another measly 3 weeks.

They can't use you for much on night crew then.  If you're in school still then that means you can;t work as much.  They want people who can work all the time use all of the power equipment.  Under 18 generally means pushing carts in the grocery world.  They need someone now, not 3 weeks from now.  You can try a chain restaurant (busing tables) or working fast food where there isn't any real equipment.  Don't put your all your eggs in krogers basket.

I worked for fedex in on of the hubs as a package "handler".  Its probably the worst job I ever had.  I'd be surprised that they'd take anyone under 18, but good luck to you,

What are you doing?  Driver helper?  Years ago, I got "hired" for a drivers helper and I didn't work 1 day.  i had to call in everyday and was never needed they used other people in my area.  This went on for about a month until I didn't call in one day (I think I was sick), got a call later that day or the next day that the day I was sick and didn't call in I was needed, I didn't call in so I was fired.  this was after I bought long johns & brown clothes for them.  good luck!

You say your 17 going to be 18 and have open availability...  Can I ask why you have open availability and are not finishing up high school?

Yeah, you can't work as night stock being 17. I mean you could, but you couldn't use any of the power jacks or the bailer. So you're kinda useless. Other than that, I would apply now as a bagger and then push your promotion for night stock.

And FYI.. Customer Service has no control over your hire. They don't have the permission to look at that. The service director can help you with that. He/she works about 40 hours a week so just call and ask when their next shift is.

Well I see OP is going to work for UPS now. I can imagine they'll throw him on some odd shift like 2 am to 6 am pushing boxes around... Well I guess he did dodge the real bullet, right?

The real question is "will she go on a date with me?"

I got hired through a friend of mine. Also the manager thought it was interesting how straightforward i was during my interview process.

There are some  people who finish high school at 17...

I know this, my roommate in college my freshman year was 17.  People usually graduate from college in may/June who are 17 and they turn 18 over the summer aug/sept...  Considering the OP puts her birthdate in December or damn close is stretching the math that she was on the cutoff and one of the youngest in in her class and looking more like she's a HS dropout.

I hope she finished and my question is why isn't she going to college...  If she did drop out I hope she goes back before the real world hits her.

Also, does Kriger require a HS diploma or GED?  This may be why she wasn't called...

Nobody graduates college at 17 years old except Doogie Howser.
