So I get a call and was asked if I can stay later. Okay, that's not too bad because there would be one other person closing with me right?
Except this one person called out.
And no one else can work (or willing to work until 10pm).
So guess who is going to have to make sure everything is clean...ALONE for nearly 2 hours (possibly 3?)
I don't get paid enough for this ****. I would rather work somewhere where they hire sufficient bodies so that there is more than 1-2 closers in my department. 12 people, and most of them can't work on a Thursday or Thursday night? What kind of janky crap is that?
and i'm usually happy about it cause i don't feel like giving other people breaks or worrying if i can go to break without the person breaking the register, or not knowing how to do something.
i'm usually there till midnight alone for 2 hrs and it's the easiest job in the world.
But you're FE though (I'm assuming). In the deli, there's A CRAPTON that needs to be done and not enough time to do it all (doesn't help if one shift is lazier than the other either). You still have to wait on customers even while in the process of cleaning (which can get your head bit off if it's not done properly--or done at all), temp logs, PPST's (which no one under me know anything of, and I barely know how to do them myself)...and they don't want to allot enough time or give enough manpower to be able to get it all done in a timely matter.
That's what I'm annoyed about--they don't hire enough in a department, and then when things don't get done at all (or done as well as they want it to be done), they are quick to yell. Sorry, when there's only 2 of us in here being pulled 434369743 different ways, some things on the bottom of the priority list don't get done. Don't like it, tough titties; get more bodies.
sounds like they knew about the call out when they called & asked the poster to stay late but didn't tell them hoping they'd say yes and screw themselves over. I've seen this happen in deli with my store.
Then they'll just expect her to get all the work done without the extra time. If she leaves a mess then her manager will go bonkers in the morning and she will likely get chewed out and/or written up for not getting the work done. Just the way it goes for closers.
well usually when they ask you to stay late its because someone called out...
Not necessarily. I've been asked to come in earlier because someone called out. I am usually one of the few people who close on a regular basis (when I was hired in, shoulda said that staying after 7pm is not an option, lol), but was asked if I could stay "as long as it takes for me to clean".
Luckily, things were resolved--the person who called out actually ended up coming in just a little later. Not sure if she's gonna get any **** about it, but no one else was willing to stay (or come in). I was asked if I wanted to pick up another shift tomorrow. Yeah, I do that and my laundry will never get done, soooo no. LOL.
