Worst Holiday season in my decade with Kroger.

Well thank God that the holiday season in over.  Just before it started we got a new store manager who didn't allow any extra hours and cut them even more than the already low amount we were already given.  And the number of new hires has recently dropped.  They work a few days then quit.  The HR lady told me that she's lucky to get 3-6 applications a week.  Since our store got rid of the hiring kiosk, the only way people can apply is online.  Problem there is not every one has internet access and the kiosk hardly cost the company any money.  Any other stores on here that had those kiosk taken away?

Hiring kiosks were removed from all stores in my area and nobody knows why. Personally, I think it was yet another dumb move on the part of Kroger. I mean, everyone I talk to, from store ASPs to co-managers, tell me that it's never been "this bad" in terms of application submissions. Fewer people are applying for a job at Kroger, and corporate doesn't seem to understand that paying minimum wage combined with fluctuating hours is a recipe for disaster. A majority of applications come from minors at our "city wide" career fairs that seem to have become a monthly thing in my district and we've already employed the maximum number of minors that state law permits, so hundreds of hours go unused every week at my store simply because we have no one to give those hours to. What you describe is common place at my store. People work a few days then quit. No one wants to stay because the pay is just about the worst in the retail industry and even if you're lucky to get close to forty hours, that amounts to less than $250.00 a week after taxes (and if applicable, union dues) in the state I work, and the only ones that make that kind of money work are kids living with their parents, retired folks looking for some extra income and maybe a wife/husband, but only if married to someone that has a better paying job.

Kroger doesn't seem to care that people are more interested in applying at Aldi, WinCo, Costco, Tom Thumb and even Albertsons (all competitors in my area) because those companies all pay better, some by a significant amount. If H-E-B ever finally decides to take the area here by storm (as it's been rumored for the past two, three years now), all I can say is, goodbye Kroger. Not only will H-E-B force some Kroger stores out of business, then you will really see no applications coming in, as everyone will be applying for a job at H-E-B, and combine that with existing Kroger employees trying to get jobs there too, well, store managers won't have to cut hours anymore because there will be very few people working in the departments period.

Where I am, working 40 hours, after taxes would only net you about $200, and that's before any dues and other fees.

As for the kiosks, personally I'd rather they get rid of them than becoming an eyesore. I've seen kiosks that were dilapidated, or just used as some bulletin board or sorts.

Our kiosk were in good shape.  But the only competition we have is Wally world across the street and a Food Lion down the road.  And they both have the kiosk.

Strange. We got rid of our kiosk too. It rarely worked correctly, so... whatever.

I will say this, though. Who the hell has time to sit there for an hour, sometimes longer, filling out these online apps for such ****ty jobs.

For the quality of employees we get lately, you might as well have the app be on a bar napkin.

If you don't have a computer at home, I tell people to go to the library. At least that's a little less nerve wracking.

Yes the hours are crazy, as one person stated you can tell a human didnt write the schedule. A five cent raise combined if you get enough hours especially now that the holidays are over it back to about 20hrs for me and most part time people in kroger. Rarely have i made 200 when taxes, union dues are taking out....so i am making a BIT of cash. Its not just kids leaving i have seen adults be there say for a week then "poof" gone.

In the end as long as kroger is making money the employees that are hired now will make very little in a system that doesnt give them a environment to thrive or grow. Either you look for second job which means less hours at kroger, find another job that can give you better pay, or have your fill/get fed up and eventually quit.

I understand they dont care so for the time being i make what i can work my hours and LEAVE.

When I get my full 28, I make just under $170 after taxes.

The only reason why I'm still here is because I'm the sole income until my husband can find a job and until I can find something better with my skills.

Problem is...what I really want to go in, I will need to either go to college for, or know someone who can vouch for my skills. Which is something I can't afford right now, even with financial aid.

If I were to get 40 hours I would take home roughly $270. It sucks man.

We have the same issue with low amount of new hires. Though I have a slightly different problem with hours. We are constantly forced overtime with threats to get written up for some random thing if we don't stay over and do every little thing they want out of us every day. The sole 3-4 people in my nightcrew unload the truck, sort the entire GM/Grocery/Misc load without help of other departments, sort the Peyton, stock the load, work every aisle repack, condition the entire store, all with 1200 case/1000 piece loads. The DDP for just stocking puts us at our full shifts, add in conditioning, repack, sorting, Peyton and we're screwed. The worst part of it is they expect us to get all of that done within our 8 hour shifts and any new people they hire either leaves within two weeks or transfers to another department. If one of us quits, either the other 3 will be forced 12 hour days every day, or the store will become an oasis of OOS.

WTH that cant be right. Im part time front end and make very close to $200 with only 26-28 hours

40 * 7.25(minimum wage) = 290 with  taxes in a high state tax state, it could be close to 200.

As per the kiosks, they are essential here.   Can be an eyesore, but they get a lot of applicants through them.

I lose around $30 from taxes and $7 for union dues.
With 18-20 hours I make around $130 each pay.
This week I have 12 hours.
Imagine my joy next week in having direct deposit of a whopping $60.

Yes the higher your hours go the more you can possibly make.
But good luck finding those hours.

my hours can change from getting 30 to something in the 20s so each week its a guessing game of "how many" hours i get this week!

I made $112 from last week.
A wonderful $112.

And with 12 hours this week I will be lucky to get half of that.
Right now I have around $130 in my checking account.

They are wondering why I am frustrated.
Even if I ignored the stress and frustration from my duties as courtesy clerk, the pay-hour rate would still be there.
The pay I can handle. The hours.....whatever.

There is absolutely no motivation for me to work at $60 a week.
This is turning in to either quitting or finding a second job.
