I've seen them hire for front end, produce, hell, I saw a couple of newbies in meat and seafood. But they are making 0 strides to get at least one person into the deli to fix any "call out issues".
If someone calls out, especially a closer, the second closer gets the shaft if no one else can come in. I make my plans when I get my schedule. I live too far, and I'm at the mercy of carpooling. If someone can't make their shift, they call me, and sometimes I simply just can't make it out there if it conflicts with other plans. I made it through the snow earlier this week. I freaking deserve to have my day off.
I get it that no one wants to take a position in this department, but they're gonna be screwed if anyone leaves. The department can't survive on only 4 people working a day, especially on Sundays.
At my store I would gladly move to deli and do what is necessary if it meant getting away from / out of Front End.
Be careful what you wish for... Deli has features of both the front end and, well, the back end. Deli workers have to stock, cook, wait on customers, and clean to high standards. The pay is sometimes different and you cannot be called to bag so I guess you would like that at least. :)

We can call deli to come help front end all the time. although most of the time they can't come if they are working the counter or have customers.
It's super hard to break away from the stuff you have to do in deli and most of the supervisors understand that, where I work. The manager, however...

It's worse if you work in a store that carries Boar's Head, because on top of all the other stuff that you have to do for Key Retailing, you need to do stuff for Boar's Head too. They stock their own stuff at least.
As for pay, I make the minimum wage. Sometimes I would rather take front end over being back there. I get paid the same rate for triple the stress.
After me, there were 5 hired. Two quit a month in, a third transferred to another department, and a fourth is considering leaving because he gets 12 hours a week on a constant basis due to lack of hours. Someone else may be leaving in the summer as well. So I'm thinking it's gonna be a disaster in the coming months.
I'm considering a move myself. This job shouldn't be more stressful than raising a preschooler. And it actually kinda is, at least for me.
