Today one the guys I work with was taken upstairs and told by management he would have to change his availability or he wouldn't be getting any hours. Management is saying now that all the part timers in the deli were going to have to work 2 nights a week. Well this guy has custody of his kids and can only get someone to watch them certain times. When he was hired the management knew this and had no problem with this.
How the hell can this be a problem after all this time? Oh and he didn't have any union rep with him and he was basically told he'd have to work when needed or hit the road. And our managers wonder why we can't keep people.
where i'm from senior people have shift preference. if the senior people speak for the shifts he is available to work then he may not get no hours management does not have to make up shifts to give him hours.
also if there are less senior people scheduled to work shifts he is available for then he should be able to bump for them shifts
Can't they work around availability restrictions with the people they have left? In my department we have someone in school and she can only work certain times. The schedule turns out just fine. She gets a few less hours than the rest of us part timers but it's nothing we can't handle.
Any store or department that can't do this is just toying with people for no reason. No wonder they have such quick turnaround now.

Not if those with restricted availability outnumbers those with open availability.
It's a living hell trying to schedule that. I'm one of 2 part-timers with open availability (by "open", I mean if it's my day off and they call me in, there is a 50% chance that I'll say no if it's later in the week). Everyone else has school or another job to go to.

Just irks me mainly because the guy I'm talking about is one of the few hard workers we got. If we lose him, or anyone in the dept., were screwed. I can count on one hand how many new hires we've had in the last year, but it would take both hands and a few toes to count all the ones who have quit.
