We used to close at 9, then we got a bunch of new managers and they decided "hey, we have workers in the deli til 10! Wouldn't it be great if we kept the deli open for customers until 10? Never mind the fact that it's impractical to have people clean the slicers only for a customer to walk up at 9:57 and ask for some rare roast beef chipped. No this is great! But also no overtime so no staying late...but you better not leave anything in the deli dirty either or else you'll be in trouble in the morning!"
What's even more frustrating is that they started scheduling people til 10:30 to accommodate for this so that we could have half hour to clean after we closed at 10, but then they decided "hey, we have workers until 10:30! Wouldn't it be great if we kept the deli open for customers until 10:30?" So they changed our closing time til 10:30 for a while after it was implemented. Then thankfully someone realized how stupid that was and switched us back to 10 but unfortunately kept the 10 closing time.
I don't know what they expect from us. It's really frustrating having to deal with this.
They expect everything from/for nothing. Learn that you're never going to please them quickly and just do what you can. let it flow like a river, my child.

They actually did something similar here. We close at 9, and was given an hour to clean. It usually doesn't take us the whole hour, but whatever. Then they said "okay, you need to clock out by 9". At first, we thought that this meant that the deli would close an hour earlier to give us that time to clean up. Nope. Basically they expected us to get everything cleaned by 9, while waiting on customers who don't know how to tell time and decide to come 3 minutes before closing. They eventually found an even ground: close at 9, leave by 9:30.
Honestly, I wouldn't have minded leaving at 9, but it was impractical. Some customers are understanding and won't ask for anything except presliced salami if they see that the slicers are being cleaned. Last night someone was asking about chicken at 8:30...we shut down the hot case at 7, no later than 7:30.
In my store, the deli closes at 10, but the last person leaves at 10:30, giving them a half hour for clean up. Since we're a somewhat smaller sales store, they usually get done early and have nothing to do for a half hour. There's one guy who I know walks around the store getting his exercise/"engaging" with customers during this time.

If there was ever a doubt you worked for Kroger, it was removed with that sentence.
My Deli has always closed at 10pm. What's worst is when you're working Fuel Center and someone walks up at 10:57 and wants to buy a bunch of things when you close at 11 >.<

na, that's the best you spend 10mins with them and get OT by no fault of your own.

We had one time, we closed at 8:30, so we could get cleaning done and be out by 9-9:30 tops. By 8:30, our designated closing time, the slicers were filthy, garbage was full in garbage, (the if you merely look at the garbage can, the garbage will spill out on its own full), floors were a slippery, gloppy, sloppy mess, things needed wiping down etc. Well because we wouldn't reopen for a customer, they complained and as punishment, management made deli stay open until 9 pm. Oh yeah, cleaning HAD to be DONE at 9 pm. We tried to tell management how it wouldn't work but all they heard was "gjfjnrjfjfnfrfcnnoybrndjnernfkdjnotjrndmenrb." Now we are back on 8:30 closing time on "probation." One lore "screw up" (logical thinking) and we're right back at the later time.

That's the most frustrating thing. The garbage bags would be full to the brim because day shift don't know how to take garbage out and leaves it all for the closers. The slicers, even if they get cleaned semi-regularly through the day, gets covered in all kinds of crap (buffalo chicken or cajun chicken anyone?) . They expect everything spotless for the morning crew, who don't care that it takes 3 hours to get everything cleaned.
If a customer comes up at 8:58 and our slicers are already cleaned, sorry. Not gonna get behind in cleaning and forced into OT (because we all know how stingy they are with that) because you want 5 kinds of meat. Shoulda came sooner.
Some people in my store actually clock out and then come back to clean so they won't get in trouble for overtime/leaving things dirty. Not me though. I just give it a quick spritz with sanitizer, wipe it off as best I can and then go home. I'm not staying extra because of Kroger's ridiculous rules and I'm definitely not staying over and not getting paid for it.

Then they get in trouble for working off the clock, which holds a heftier punishment than overtime.
It's a good concept, but getting caught is too great.
Yeah, I agree. They bitch about overtime (and how THEIR bonuses will be affected), but Heaven forbid should we tell a customer that were closed in the deli.

If they are doing that report it to your management and union rep. That's a huge ethic and legal violation.

I am a deli employee at store 824, and our closing time has been 10 pm since before I started, with the closer always getting off at 10. It can be done any day, with only one closing person working after 8. You just have to hustle.
