Possible chance to distance myself from (or leave) Kroger...but there's a catch
Permalink

I have an interview with Home Depot, supposedly for the gardening department, on Monday.

If the person on the phone at their HR headquarters was correct, the pay would be about $9.50 an hour -- more than $2 what I make at Kroger now as courtesy clerk.
But it would probably only be part-time, and I have a feeling if I am hired it may just be for their seasonal openings...the company recently announced they were hiring a huge number of persons for seasonal work.

My question is, does anyone on here have two jobs, and, if so, how do you manage your schedule regarding Kroger?
if you work at Kroger you know what a pain in the ass it is to try to tell them you need a day off, or deal with their spastic, nearly Las Vegas-odds style of scheduling employees.

I already made a decision -- perhaps prematurely, perhaps in vain if I don't get the job -- that Home Depot will come first.
The pay will be higher. It has to come first.

But how would I tell Kroger that I can work 'X' day if they make their schedule in advance and it's tough to get a day off for the next week?

I would make sure if it's seasonal or part time. If they are going to offer you more than what you are currently making and you can work there and kroger....go for it

The job would supposedly pay $9.50 an hour and I make $7.25 an hour at Kroger.
The Home Depot job would also be part-time, as I am at Kroger, with around part-time hours, probably 20-25 a week.

The fun part is that this Home Depot is just across the street from the Kroger.
So if I were to work there, there could be a very real possibility of working at Home Depot part of the day and Kroger the rest of the day, and vice versa.

I work two jobs. One pays more and is less work. (Hint: It's not Kroger) I restricted my schedule to work at the other place during the week and at Kroger on the weekends. (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) So, I keep my insurance at Kroger and get much better pay during the week. That's how I deal with it. :)

**** man... I would have tried to do this a lot earlier, and saved yourself a lot of grief. Go for it!

I'm about done with Kroger, myself.

Roommates friend worked for HD, he was getting 40 hours during the summer.  After labor day his hours got cut though.  He held on though and likes it.  They work their people hard.  Your not gonna want to do both.  If I was in  your situation and was offered the job I would take it.

...I think I know what store you work at...For the sake of secrecy and security, I'm not going to say which store. Now all your rants make even more sense to me. Yes, get out of the store. It was a lot better before our current management team got there..

If you do get a job at Home Depot, I'd take it. They are known to pay a bit more than other places, possibly because of it being pretty strenuous work. I interviewed for them a couple of times and if it wasn't for the fact that I was misled into an overnight position, I would've taken it despite my health issues.

At this point, I'm thinking anything would be better than Kroger.

Where is the Subway located and what do they pay?  Take the Home Depot job and then work at Subway as your second job.  Then you won't ever have to work at Kroger again.biggrin

What are the odds that at least one other person who works at "my" store would also be on here? :P

Although it is common for big stores to be near big stores so you may be thinking of somewhere else...

I'll just say that if you ARE from my store, I suggest you do as I have done and keep this site to yourself.

I've mentioned it to a few of my fellow courtesy clerks but I have never given out the address.

As far as I know -- or knew, I guess now -- I am / is / was the only one at my store who knows about this forum.

If the chance is that you *are* from my store, then, yea.

You know what sort of bullcrap we go through, ESPECIALLY on Front End where I work.

And that one upper-level manager who likes to take a smoke break at least once per hour? Nice guy but he panics too easily when he sees low cart levels.

So there is supposed to be winter weather on Monday morning.
Hopefully I don't have to walk through snow or sleet.

Hmm ok, we not at the same store(none of our managers smoke) but your descriptions sounded very much like my store. I guess you now know it's really no better at any store.
