I have been with Kroger since September last year in Produce. Average 34-36 hours a week. The currant Back-up maybe be leaving soon and would love to have her position assuming she transfers out. How do I apply for that position? or to whom do I need to talk with?

When the back-up person leaves, they'll post an opening for the job at all stores in your area. Usually they're on a bulletin board in the breakroom. When that happens, ask your produce manager what you need to do about filling out the necessary paperwork. Keep in mind though you may not get the job since someone else from another store with more seniority may apply for the same job.
Becoming a backup entails doing the work of the manager when they are gone, so you will have to know how to do everything they do including ordering, displays, schedule making, etc. I've never worked produce, so I'm not sure the entirety of what's involved, but that's something for you to ask about.

They are usually handled by the store manager, and if they can't find anyone in store, they'll usually talk to the department coordinator to see if there is anybody who might be interested. I'd walk into this cautiously. Only accept the position if it either fits your career goals or pays substantially better than your current position. Results WILL be expected of you, so don't think you can fly under the radar.

Mgmt is technically allowed to promote and then post that newly empty position but 95% of the time they don't, in which case it's required by contract.
