So with the new "Make it right!" policy, we can now get FREE FOOD!
I was talking to one of the cashiers today (I work in meat) about this crappy new policy, and he said that if there is no barcode, the item is free. I couldn't believe that, so I grabbed a package of steaks, and said "So if I were to rip this barcode and price tag off, take it through the line, I would be given it for free?" And he said yes!
Looks like I will finally start shopping at Kroger now. (I used to do 99% of my shopping at Walmart, because things are usually 10-20 cents cheaper. Only exception would be if I were buying Kroger brand items, like paper towels, water, or plastic utensils).
This new policy is awesome! I'm going to tell all my friends to come stock up on crap. Thanks, Kroger!
So instead of doing the more time-consuming (but definitely more sensible) way of just getting a price check, they'd just be willing to part with a $20 slab of meat? Damn, that's just some lazy and terribly thought-out tactic.

Yeah... no... I'm heading to Sprouts or Walmart.
Doing a price check cuts into the company's precious Que-Vision scores.
"Quick! Give it to 'em for free before we get a dip! We gotta give this one line moving cause we don't get another cashier for three hours!"
Whatever 'savings' they get from 'free' items is more than made up for in the revenue from all the other items they're gonna pay for. The house always wins.
bagger used to run back to the meat dept or any dept for a price check now they text message as they slowly walk to the department. its easier to cut hours and give things away than lose more customers.
"If it doesn't scan it's free, right?" - Customers who fancy themselves witty.
lol, It actually is (at least, if it's up to $25 here).
We have those words and policy on a sign placed next to the pinpad. We're not allowed to specifically mention the policy though. What we're supposed to do first is to get a price check, or if it will take too long, make a reasonable price in favor of the customer.
Of course, only the most scrupulous of customers actually bother to read the sign. It can't be helped, since the sign is just as big as the pinpad and the words aren't the largest font and face.
EDIT: We define "doesn't scan or scan correctly" as the item not ringing up the same as the shelf label, or if the sale price isn't being applied to the item when it's supposed to.

this is just asking to be abused. they want cashiers to do more stuff they mostly can't handle, especially refunds, and everybody in the store to be writing rain checks too.
this new thing came about because customers said in a survey they felt like they were being treated as criminals and Kroger thinks that's only like 3% so let's just give stuff away just to do it.
this is all short term gain if any is seen.
I head something about giving cash refunds receipt or not if it's under ten dollars but I haven't seen that in writing yet.
I was doing something that required a 0.00 item to be rang through and noticed that there was a "make it right" option that only required an operator override. I was blown away.
Yes, I used it.
