Today's brilliant idea: New PLU scanning policy
Permalink

So, fresh off the rousing success of "We can make it right", we've got a new policy about PLU for produce: If it has a barcode, we have to scan the barcode instead of typing the PLU in. And we have to tell customers in self checkout to do the same. Apparently they don't trust the cashiers to ring up organic items as such or some such nonsense, so now we have to put up with a reduced ring tender (and longer lines). Sigh.

Stupid ideas from corporate are very common at Kroger. This just shows that Kroger is trying way too hard. Yes, there is a difference from trying hard to run the business and trying way too hard.

. . . we have to tell customers in self checkout to do the same.

Yet another hassle to inflict upon the self-check victims/customers?  They'll love that.

I saw email about this just asking us to prod cashiers to double check if something is organic or not... some things you can tell by shape. the lemons seem to be rounder.

if the double stack barcodes were in the system it wouldn't be an issue but there's plenty of barcodes from produce that aren't.  Part of that is suppliers but it's still ridiculous and when you tell the scan coordinator they say oh we never put that in because of X.... well who gives a crap what your reason is you're pissing off self-check customers and messing up ring/tender.

I sure hope all the barcodes are in the effing system. As a self-checkout attendant, one of many annoyances is when someone's getting red onions or something else that doesn't register but always has a gd barcode and it yells at them and they yell at me. I even try to do it sometimes and it just grabs the damn barcode.

also we have organic mangoes but 94959 (the code on the mango!) is not in the system. so people get organic for regular prices because who has time to run back to produce on a busy day

Let's just spray paint all the organic produce pink. It's all so ****ing expensive who cares if you confuse an organic green cabbage for an organic red cabbage?

This is supposed to be going into effect in our store as well, but so far it hasn't become mandatory, and I don't expect it will. Lines will become far too backed up. We're already dealing with a large increase in customers because we've had two major stores in our city close. Next to Safeway, we're the only Quality store in our area (Costco and Walmart are a ways out there).

We've had it mentioned that we should be scanning the Barcodes, but almost nobody does, not even our PICs or Managers who jump into a checkstand.  I just don't see it happening as a matter of policy. We have some of the fastest cashiers in our division. Our average is far above that of the rest of the division in terms of Effectiveness. With a lot of the codes not even being in the system (I've filled out almost a dozen "Item Not Found" reports on them already), it's just too much of a pain in the ass.

I suspect once our QVision scores start to go down because lines back up too much, they'll start to relax the policy and eventually revert back to the system that has made us one of the top stores in our district.
