Can a minor close produce
Permalink

I just got promoted to produce. Since Im still a minor, is their anything against me closing. Im still on front ends schedule and I haven't talked to the produce head yet.

On another note, I cant use the baler, trash compactor or any type of knife. Dont know how they expect me to get much work done. I can tell they thought promoting me over very wellno...

You are not supposed to use the baler unless you are 18.  If you are 18, you are an adult.

The Federal laws will dictate if you are able to close or not.  It should be posted in the building somewhere.  Being in high school might make it difficult for you to close.

Don't worry.  You will be bitched out if you are not getting enough work done.  I can see it already:  You will have a 10 mile list of things to do but spend most of your night bagging.  Then, get bitched out the next day for not getting any work done.  We'll see.  lol.

Yes a minor can close produce... The tasks involved in closing a department are essentially cleaning and organizing supplies/inventory.

A minor always closes produce at our store. It's annoying because they can't use the baler or trash compactor and always has to get someone else to do it for them after hauling giant carts of stuff back there.

Whenever another department leaves cardboard in the backroom, I just take it back to their department.

If it's a minor though, you're supposed to help them. How hard can it be to throw in a bag of trash for some kid?

It's not a "bag of trash" though, it's multiple carts of boxes that have bags inside of them as well as fruit remains as well as the black totes.  So you have to separate it, crush it, do the trash etc.   It takes more than just a second, and when you're back there trying to unload a truck but the hallways are blocked with carts of trash the situation is exacerbated since they leave when you come to work and are doing things in the back room.   I know I do it anyway, doesn't make it any less annoying when you have things to do and never enough time to do them in.  Not to mention Deli often closes with females who can't do the trash themselves so that leaves just a stinky back room disaster you have to go into and clean up for other departments.

Why can't they do trash? That's just pure laziness and should be complained to management about. The females on my night crew do trash all the time. Gender isn't the problem. It's that they get away with it.

They always say they can't lift it.   To me, it should be in the job requirements if it isn't already to be able to lift a certain weight to work in Deli.

There is; it's 50 lbs. Everyone who is hired should be able to lift at least that much. I'd probably tell the clerk to either 1) not fill it up so much - change the bag often or 2) open the bag and throw the trash individually until it's light enough for their small hands.

I work in the bakery and whoever's here at night always takes trash back. Our baker always takes her morning trash back as well. Our lead baker is a 50 year old woman, if she can lift the bags of trash, I'm sure your deli people can. It's not the gender, it's laziness. They need to be told off.
