"There is a disturbing pattern of company decisions to close three grocery stores near low-income and African-American communities in Flint," he said.

^That is a perfect example of playing the race card. Why does identifying an ethnic community matter when describing an area? Is it to make the case drastic and horrifying?

If Kroger believes that the location was not profitable (and I wouldn't be surprised if it indeed not profitable), then I agree with their decision to close it, the community be damned.

Remember, folks, Kroger is a business, not a charity. No business will accept a declining revenue and sales in the name of "charity". Otherwise, they wouldn't try to make money in the first place.

actually they have kept and will keep stores open in certain areas if they aren't profitable just to stick it to competitors. The real reason, I feel, is that the area being a poor, mostly black, area was the reason for the closure as those areas tend to have a higher rate of theft and crime.

How would shareholders feel if they saw alarming SHRINK numbers in those stores? Shareholders would much rather have those stores closed than "feel good" about providing jobs to that community.

Not when there's other Kroger stores in the area (as one graphic in that article portrays). The closest store would be "number 5" on that photo, which isn't really much of a distance from the closed location.

If it were only one out of three stores in the entire county, then hey, they might just have it last long enough to hopefully turn a profit.

There are Kroger locations in my area that have closed due to losses. Not worth sustaining two stores when only one of them turns any real profit.

There are a few stores they keep open while operating at a loss, there's one in a podunk town about 100 miles from here, does about 80k a WEEK, with roughly 125k loss a year. But, it's the only grocer in the area so they keep it up. I'm genuinely curious what kind of store manager salaries there are for stores with such low volume.

80k a week? I imagine the people there have to run a whole department like the deli by themselves. Yes, it's small sales but that also means the whole department probably gets like 50 hours a week on ELMS....
