I am learning that at Kroger when it comes to hours, seniority means NOTHING. Despite what they told me when I was hired. In the department I work in there are 3 positions: 1 full time and 2 part times. I have been there longer than the other part time employee by 2 years and they gave him 40 hours and me 20 hours or less every week for months. I thought they might have changed his position to full time, but this week he is getting 35.
Unofficial word around the store is its because he is so good with customers and I have failed like 2 or 3 mystery shoppers.
So don't believe anything about what they say about seniority. I'm pretty sure if he wanted off the same week I did for vacation they would give it to him over me.
Same. A girl that used to be out in our Fuel Center was higher seniority than my other coworker. My other coworker got full time hours and the girl was cut down below me even though she has way more seniority. Finally she transferred inside and making great hours. Now, I'm the one getting picked on and I'm the one stuck with very low hours. Great, isnt it?
Posting your problems on this forum is not a solution. Do something about your problems or stop complaining. Nothing will change until you take responsibility for your own life instead of seeking help from strangers on the internet.
No one can take advantage of you without your permission.
Sometimes it depends on if they want to get rid of you. A somewhat unspoken thing that happens at our store (at least it's the rumor) is that if they want to get rid of you, they'll cut your hours to the minimum and then put you on the worst shifts (Bottle-machine shifts for example). However, part of it comes down to hours available that you've put down. At my store, when I was in our food department, I was averaging 40 hours a week, almost more than most of the people who have been there much longer than me because my availability worked out in such a way that it put me in a position to gain those hours (basically a 3-11:30pm shift for Recovery).
Once I switched departments, I lost a bunch of hours, but after only a few months, I'm back up to 30+ hours per week again because I make myself available, I extend at every opportunity, never call in, and always cover shifts for people when they need it. Reliability + open availability is usually enough to gain you those hours you're missing out on.

From my experience, the schedule writer doesn't care about seniority or status. I'm a full time student and full time worker with the most seniority and most open availability in my department, yet I'm always having to fight for hours. It's ridiculous.
