markdowns how many days do you give

New person working in nutrition.  When you are doing markdowns, how many days beforehand would you markdown the organic milk, cheese, yogurt?  For instance since today is the 9th of April and the milk goes out of date on the 20th of May...when do you start marking down.  Help!!!

Ask your boss. If he tells you directly, he can't complain if he dislikes something you do. If you take advise from here, he can complain that you are doing it wrong.

I can't imagine marking something down that isn't due to go out of date for another six weeks.

I sometimes mark down things that i have excess inventory of like for instance when something comes off an ad or if they ship me extra of a product for a promotion. What i was told was to put 30 days max and if it still hasn't been sold after that then to put it at a lower price and 30 days again or however many days there is left before the product expires

I agree.  Ask your boss.  Perishable items have very specific guidelines when it comes to marking them down.

When I worked nutrition, we mostly followed Dairy's standards: 10 days before expiration for the gallon milk of Simple Truth.

As for the other brands, we weren't allowed to mark them down until the day before at the earliest, unless we're closing them out, then we mark them down immediately. Same for the yogurt, cheese, etc: the day before at the earliest.

But that's just to give you an idea. Best bet is do what others have said and ask your department manager and/or other bosses.
